I know someone, and he employed a professional company to canvass large companies by phone. They found out exactly who they needed to speak to, they then made calls to this person and found out if they where interested in a free quotation. All contacts were emailed to him after call. They would book the appointments everything, even the name of the operator that made the call. They had a 10% success rate on getting appointments, and 5% of those appointments turn into work.

But these were very big contracts, British Gas, Harvey Nichols and so on.

In a sense yes, Few years ago would pay the kids, dead simple sit in the car and make sure they do it right dead cheap as well, then they start to learn thier value (I'm a great teacher) and chrge more or want a % of the value of the first clean plus a delivery payment...still works to my benifit though I reduce pocket money because they are earning...
Then kids grow up canvassers lost, I am now starting to use the grand kids and thier friends (problem is though thier parents are teaching them how to screw grandad into the ground)
The secret is not doing as you like but liking what you do

I have a guy who works for me canvassing. He gets the first clean spread over two visits, ie. jan £10 house (paid £5) Feb same house (paid £5) If they cancel within that period then he repays his commission otherwise we just carry on. Has worked well for me over the years and he is very happy, he can earn £50 - £100 in a night!! In the right areas of course.
Covering Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey, Berkshire
