Hope it resolves itself.

Your letter must have had an impact to get such a quick reply.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi all.
Thanks for the comments everyone.
I just thought I would revisit this thread as the situation has now moved on.  I received a cheque today in the post for payment in full as requested.  I will name the company because I want to say that once someone at a slightly higher level was made aware of the situation, it was resolved quite quickly and I applaud their actions for doing the right thing.  I feel that the young manager at the store was under pressure but ought to have given me a fairer hearing and followed up on his promises to contact me about the unpaid debt.
I would say that there is no need to avoid working for this company but it does reinforce the need to get some kind of agreement in writing (not just with this company but with any).
As I had already written this money off, I will give one third of it to a local charity.

This is not a name and shame but rather, just a post to say well done for resolving the problem once it had been drawn to their attention.
The company is a clothing retailer known as "Republic".

Yes.  If you know the layout, You will understand why I had to get there around 6 am to do it as it's in a pedestrian area.

Well there is a guy who does the regular clean on the lower level windows so I hope he doesn't lose out.  He's an OK guy and provided the initial introduction to the original manager.  This is one of the problems for Crawley with me.  I live less than a mile from the biggest concentration of shops for miles around yet I know many of the W/Cs - some quite well.  Indeed, I have provided occasional holiday cover for a couple of them so there is quite a trusting relationship.  If I were to canvass the shops, I would be bound to tread on the toes of someone who I get along with.  As things stand, I do three of the shops.  I do one on a subcontract basis on a subcontract basis.  I've never met the guy but I send my invoice once a month and he sends me a cheque.  He did used to post on here occasionally but that wasn't how I picked up the job.  I picked it up by an ad in YP.  Also, there are also another two shops I do in my own right.
I have a good relationship with some of the W/Cs who frequent the town centre.  None of the guys I know have WFP so, as a trusted, non poacher, I have picked up WFP work from them at times - some of the jobs were decent ones too.  I'm OK with that status quo.
