Socket in communal area
« on: July 01, 2008, 01:21:32 pm »
I went to plug my porty into a socket in a communal area, the socket looked like a normal 3 pin one but the middle top hole was  a little smaller, hence my plug didn't fit.....

Can you buy an adapter, are these common in apartment blocks.

Thanks Donato.

Not seen this before but sure is an effective way of a resident in the block plugging in for free electricity. Sounds fair enough to me.

If you doing work for the owner of the block ask can you have a plug.

If its for a tenant - looks like you going to need their plug point.

As Joe says this is to stop residents plugging into free electric. Also most of these are on 6 amp trips so although you could run a vacuum cleaner off it most of them trip out with carpet cleaning machines.

Go to some of the electrical wholesalers that Sparkies use. You can usually get them there.
As far as i know there are at least two variations. Sometimes they will ask you why you want it.

Also do as Joe suggested and ask if you can borrow the cleaner's adaptor.

Just goes to show the benefit of doing a survey first in this type of accommodation; I bet you now add that onto your list of things to check for (like how quickly does the water flow) and as John mentioned don't forget to find out where the fuse boxes are.

Hope that helps.

yes, a TM did come to mind, as I also had to drag my ninja (heavy!) up a flight of stairs to get nearer to a power point I could use  ::)

Paul, some days I haven't got a clue where I am  ;D

 ;D

Don instead of dragging the machine around, just buy your self an extention lead and keep it on your van, they come in handy some times ;)
