Leather spray job in Widdrington, Northumberland
« on: June 18, 2008, 11:16:16 am »
Hi all

I have just been up to house, pigmented leather, tried to clean and this happened....See below pic

Pretty sure its pigmented leather (did the tests) but the paint came off sooooo easy it was unreal. She said she had not tried to clean the sofa with anything else but other areas of sofa were damaged due to her cleaning with a 'wet cloth'. hmmmmm

I told her I would not be comfortable cleaning it as the paint could come off more and suggested she get it resprayed instead which it really needs!

Is anyone interested in the job? Please contact me via forum and I shall pass on your details tonight where they can give you a call.

Cheers

John.

This is not a cleaning job but a restoration one.  It is a 2 tone leather and due to age, wear, incorrect cleaning products!! the top coating has been weakened and is now coming off very easily. Any wet product will remove more.  This is a very common finish and you need to be able to identify it to avoid getting into trouble!!

If the lady wants restoration we have someone who can cover that area.

Cheers

Bad place to start cleaning a suite, either Leather or Fabric. Clean an inconspicious area first then if there are problems it is not that noticable. I know on Leather it is not always like that due to degradation of the wear areas as opposed to hidden areas.

John, with this kind of a problem it is the used  areas that the top coat wear down off.If a test was done to the back or side it would have shown no problem as the finish would have been good. The only time you find out is on a well worn area.

As the guys above have said its an easy one to sort out.

John get your self on a leather course quick mate and you will be able to earn some money on these type of jobs. ;)

Hi

I tested the cleaning on the back first and it was absolutely fine. I had a feeling the arm would be a problem so started there instead of cleaning half the suite and getting to the arm and finding it iffy. Time and motions man in the making!

Thanks to all that replied. Steve Gunn rang me this afternoon after a few minutes of posting. If he dont fancy it ill go down the list.

I have done a cleaning course but never a repair one. Always fancied having a pop at it but not sure of the demand. One job a week is ok but id want more than that. JK told me yesterday there is a big call for repair but as I only clean one leather suite a fortnight - not sure of the repair.

Can anyone change my mind for me?

Cheers
John

Yes I have about half a page dedicated to leather cleaning and I do get calls about it but not as many as I like as I prefer cleaning leather. I always get terrific results from it (apart from today ofcourse)!

Didn't think anyone in Widdrington could afford leather ;D

You've probably just taken off the top layer of coal dust and got down the the original colour ;D ;D

One trick I do is something I learned from Brian at Extracta. If you go to a house for a carpet clean and they have a leather suite you think needs cleaning...ask if they want it done. If they hum and ha just ask if they want to see a free demo to see how 'filthy' it is. If they say yes get some masking tape and make a square around the dirtiest seat cushion and clean inside it. Take the masking tape away and it should look quite dramatic!

Needless to say explain to them what you are doing beforehand so there are no comebacks!!!  ;D ;D ;D

9/10 they book you in for the leather job. I use this trick all the time and it works a treat!

John
good tip using masking tape, I'll use that once I've completed my leather training.
At the moment if a carpet clean customer has a leather suite, I'm informing them leather cleaning will be available soon. :)
