the science of leaflet drops

HEY GUYS!

has anybody had any luck organising mass scale leaflet drops to people's houses?  how do they go about finding reliable people to drop them?  how can you protect against them all being dropped into a convenient bin?  how much do you pay? 

i;m struggling to get beyond what myself and a 15 yr old boy can do outside of his school time.

any luck with including leaflets with papers? or by the royal mail?

If i got kids to do it i would tell them to leave them stuck in the letter box so i could drive the delivery route quick and check they had done all the streets i told them to,also i would give the boy delivering the free local paper a couple of quid and tell him to pop them in the letter box with his papers.I only advertise in the local trade rag now,it`s £75 and it puts out 13000 copies per month,i still get more work from name on van and word of mouth though,a good sign written van is the one mate.

royal mail charge £20 per thousand leeflets but have a minumum charge of £500 ps i work for royal mail thinking of starting something else cause royal mail now is 90% part time work

Hi, I have done leaflet drops in four ways.

1) Myself, when times are quiet (not done for a while now so I guess thats good!)
2) Pay friends and family (Trust worthy, but short lived!)
3) A specialist leaflet delivery company. Based in Manchester costs approx £40 per 1000 +VAT.
4) Inserted into newspapers.

The Newspaper one was definately the worst. I delivered 6000, and didnt get a single response. For normal leaflets I reckon on about 1 in 400 responding, so would reccomend that. The paid company seemed to do a good job but of course you cannot guarantee that they delkiver every single one. Works for me though.

I've done leaflet drops on quite a large scale and received a massive difference in response between paying someone to deliver & delivering yourself.
A local leaflet delivery company charged me £36/thousand, delivered 3000/week for 10 weeks, from the 30 000 leaflets delivered I received 20 calls = 1 call per 1500 leaflets.
I've since delivered around 5000 leaflets myself & received 50 calls = 1 call per 100 leaflets.
The leaflets are quality 3 folded & my delivery response rate reflects that, with a 15X lower call rate it's clear the company didn't deliver many of their 30 000.
Spend your money on the best possible leaflets & spend your time delivering!

1 call in 1500 leaflets is about right.

1 call in 100 leaflets is out of this world dont expect that every time you must have been advertising free money.

If we could get that on a regular basis we would be laughing all the way to the bank.

I've dropped another 500 leaflets over the last couple of days & have received 4 calls already, the leaflets don't promote any special offers or discounts but they are professional.

We get about 1-2% on leaflets if we deliver them ourselves. Finding someone reliable and trustworth to deliver them is a problem and a half.

It also becomes very expensive when you compare what you have to pay them per hour against the number they can drop in an hour. Uneconomical I would say.

Two years ago we paid an absolute fortune to have a leaflet dropped inside the local Freebee papers over quite a large area.

It was for a new business venture and I wasn't involved with arranging it but the person who did thought it would be worth the money to hit as many homes as possible quickly.

The results were virtually non existant. I seriously don't believe most of them were ever delivered. It also killed of the new business venture because a lot of confidence was lost.

At the end of the day the only way to do it is if you have the control.

Normal response rates for flyers is 1% but this is dependant on many factors such as what you're selling and what time of year (if seasonal) etc. If you're selling cleaning, spring is obviously a better time than the winter months.

A good copy and a good design all help in creating a professional look- I design and print flyers every day of the week and they can be very effective if you do your research well. I'm not a copywriter but have designed flyers where the customer has employed a copywriter and the response rates have trebled. A good eye catching design with an offer of some sort also goes down well. The trick to leaflets is not to skimp on costs. The same copy can often be used over and over again and the same with the design and a good designer will only charge you a few quid for minor changes later on!
