Sideways cam lever, is that the sort of thing used on bicycle seat tubes?(but posher)

Basically yes! Obviously made for us in the exact sizes to match out tubes.

Why re-invent the wheel when current technology does the job. They are stronger and lighter than plastic/nylon clamps.

Fiendish! so they probably have an allen screw or something to stop them slipping off when slack? Undo the screw and whip off the unwanted section?

Exactly.

They have a tapered end stop that prevents over extension. Undo the Allen bolt (key comes with the pole) and the section can slide off.
