« on: February 18, 2008, 10:43:01 pm »
Whats the advantages and disadvantges of having a Merlin system.

i no it makes more whater but i mean costs for prefilters etc? on the window cleaning warehouse you can one for 215 + VAT which seems cheap compaird to standard RO systems such as 300gpd.

also what about 40/40 ro system i dont really no anything aboutt then can anyone give me more information or any website which discribe these in detail.

thanks dave
Dave.

I think standardisation is the main thing with merlins.  no worrying about if your parts wioll fit etc.

Although I have had a beer to many and might be talking waffle :D

yeah, fittings as in hose connectors, spares etc.  Other RO might have different sized connectors, hose fittings, etc.  No real idea as I only havce a merlin.

as long as your tap pressure is over 40psi then it will make more than most will ever need.  we still have ours (it feeds the spare tanks at my sons), most of the time we fill up at mine (twin 4040 boosted) but only because of convenience (I've a bigger yard for the vans etc)

at my sons the tap pressure is 50psi and it will make about 1500ltrs a day there, tap tds in 215ppm, out 007ppm.

there's a carbon prefilter in them but we binned it and use a 10inch sediment and a 10inch carbon before the merlin, the top sump is obviously empty then.

good little system, before the 4040 it was at my yard and we use about 1000ltrs a day so over the 2 years at my yard it prob made around 400k - 500k litres, still going good.

I have a Merlin running at a bit under 40 PSI and even in that situation it produces 40 - 45 litres per hour of pure.

This is good advice from Alan as the pre-filtration on Merlins is very poor.  Considering the speed with which water can be produced, you really do need at least a sediment and one carbon pre-filter, ideally a sediment and two carbon pre-filters.  Realistically, you have to treat the Merlin as just a fancy looking RO membrane holder unless you're in a very soft water area (below 50 ppm).

Another point to bear in mind is that they do not like being used sporadically.  Ideally, they should be used for at least 10 minutes per day.  If they are not used daily it will shorten the life span of the RO membrane.  They are not as easy to flush as a 4040 or a 300 gpd.

another good point from alex - if you do get one try and use it as often as possible, so turn up your varistream and use loads of water!

I reckon ours is still going so well because we use a lot of water.  even though we have the twin 4040 now we still use about 1000lrs a week from the merlin so it does get a run once a week although we do let it run for 15mins each evening (well my son tells me he runs it).

Cheers for the info lads.

I mite consider buying one in the summer months! so if i do buy a Merlin system i still need 2 get pre filters before the Merlin system? if so could you use the ones from a 300GPD ro or do you have to get special ones?
Dave.

I'd recommend using the 10inch prefilters and housings from an ro-man etc and binning the carbon prefilter in the top sump of the merlin, although I'd use the merlin prefilter for the first couple of months, only because you might as well get some use out of it.

NWH

don't bother mate, the resale values are pathetic so you'll be able to pick up a nice black/electric blue one at reasonable money.  then get it signwritten, if you really fancy it we got ours done in glow in the dark shhhttuufff, it was over £1700, closer to 1800 if I remember right.  you can get some really nice rims for them too but you need to go for the vw ones as they're made for taking the weight.

Hi NWH

ours is new but not because I'm loaded, but because its tax deductable so for the little extra (actually a good bit extra) you get much more van.

it cost with extras £23,500 but the t30 174 starts at 21k.
