spring loaded ballbearing on one section
steel/brass hole on the next section
painted lines to show position of bearing
im suspecting this is what peterF might be using on his new pole
shouldnt be too difficult to do it yourself

B&Q have some poles that use a spring bearing the way you describe . there not bad poles either for the price of them .
