Getting new business
« on: February 05, 2008, 06:30:11 pm »
Please can any one advise me on getting new business.I only do family & a few friends at the moment. Looking at going into window cleaning full time. What is the best way to pick up new work(door knocking or distributing leaflets)Also is it best to buy in printed leaflets from a profesional printer  or design a basic one on your own p.c.
All help appreciated,
John.

do a search on here for parish magazines. Everyone says good things about them. Each to their own but i find countryside work to be more lucrative and easier to pick up stand alone profitable work.
Look at the thread "New customers slowing down." Quickly start leafletting the villages as well as putting an advert in parish magazines because each winter i have a higher % of success in gaining new work from leaflets. It's normally around 5% but is nearer 15% so far this year.
Jan/feb and march has been the best time for me to pick up new work the last 4 winters now.

THIS IS A DATE FOR MY CALENDAR!!

NWH and I agree!!!  ;D  ;D

For building up a decent WC business quickly you can NOT beat doorknocking. Get some nice leaflets pronted to takewith you as well and leave them in the houses you get no reply from. Make a note of these and go back a few days later. This concentrates ur new work and like NWH say it will snowball from there. I would say go all out for 100 to 150 new customers from doorknocking to get u off to a flying start. Don't bother knocking during the day.. too many no answers. Do it betwen 5 ish and 7. 30 ish.

I agree with the others. Window cleaning is about knocking on doors, dealing with the people, working out or guessing a price, making mistakes and learning by them.
You will get a feel for things as you go along and as your confidence grows it gets easier.
The ability to actually clean glass is not really that important although a basic skill level does help. A big smile and a cheery manner wins hands down.

john, i don't door knock to gain custom.
According to all who door knock it is the most successful way to gain custom, so i can't argue there as i don't do it. I mentioned leaflets and parish magazine because they are the only 2 ways i do directly use to gain new custom.
If you can doorknock then do it as it is a numbers game at the end of the day. What i will say as a country boy though is that if you target the villages give as much information about yourself on the leaflet / advert. Full name and landline number at least. Then a couple of days later doorknock the villages.
Villagers are a fickle lot and the default feeling towards outsiders knocking their door is that they are delivering something, lost or casing out the joint.
I also think that jan/feb and march are windows of opportunity for gaining rural custom as i have done well each winter since i started. So i recommend you start tagetting the villages asap cos by march/april there will be more visible window cleaners.
Oh and also price up your rural work a little higher than you would in town. good luck.

I have always preferred leaflets although i freely admit door knocking gets better results. If you get a bad day door knocking it can really sap your motivation.
