Can anyone explain this?
« on: January 02, 2008, 07:59:10 pm »
Have been cleaning for about 18 months now - mainly 'trad' but some WFP.

When using the squeegee in a 'fanning' motion on some houses I seem prone to leaving lines on the glass where the end of the squeegee rubber has arched across. Sometimes it is just a mark, other times it is thin line of water.

Sometimes these marks/lines 'disappear' moments later - at other times they leave a permanent mark on the glass that needs to be polished off.

Glass on other houses never causes me problem.

Is it the type of glass? Is it the age of the glass? Is it down to the amount of water used or the amount of cleaning/scrubbing prior to squeegying?

Or is it me, or my technique?   It always seems to be the same houses though!

Would be interested in your thoughts and welcome any advice.

Thanks.

Mike

Mike, I would suggest it's probably the glass. In my (little) experience, I'm quicker without fanning. I,m mostly wfp, but when I'm doing trad I find that if I detail to top edge and one side before squeegeeing I have no problems. If I try to fan, I leave lines which I have to clear up. Whether they are superficial or actual water is irrelevant. I still have to go over them. So I don't fan ;D

I have a very slight 'dog ear' on my channel.

I have also experimented by putting in a new rubber (regardless) just to see if that will cure the problem - but it doesn't.

Sometimes, pressing harder on the squeegee seems to help - but not always.

Thanks

Most importantly is to have a really good properly cut rubber. Straight down, guilletine method with a razor. That, and old glass, usually single glass.

I don't consider myself an expert but like GQC says, I think you have to cut the rubber 100% straight.

Also, even if you see the tiniest damage of the edges, then you will get lines, also, try tapping the blade on the glass to squirt out excess water, or dry it with a microfibre cloth first. While fanning, go lower then usual in the dry area to dry the blade during strokes on glass that's being difficult.

i noticed this, i dont know whether its to do with the rubber, but i usually detail the top and sides quickly, then fan the window, overlapping where ive just been, usually there are no marks but if the windows are quite wet from scrubbing with the tbar, then this sometimes happen - then i quickly go over the top and sides with a cloth and dry the end of the channel both sides by quickly rubbing in the cloth- this has become habbitual and then squeegee straight down the window, overlapping and it leaves no marks.
once you get the hang of it, its really quick and if you do get the lines, then quickly go over it.
