In some cases this can be quite difficult, for the unskilled eye,  but normaly they are thicker than a standard BT cable, you used to be able to look at the poles and Identify a BT cable from a mains cable, all mains Telegraph poles were marked with a Warning overhead power line sign, but now the EU has made it law that all BT telegraph poles should also show the same sign even if it does not carry a mains wire.

Just take care and check the area your working in, if in doubt stay away or take special care.

looks like no one should trust a quick glance at pole or cable thickness
ive heard that elec cables should all be earthed   some reports from this site state theyre supposed to be....but,

The only mains cables you get running above your head are live and neutral, they don't carry an earth cable :o :o

This is because all earth cables are connected to the nearest earth point in the home via a copper earth rod.

If you are working with a carbon pole, always wear electricians gloves.  But always stay well clear of lines, full stop

Don't worry I've posted before on this subject and had some negative replies on the dangers - positively shocking  :o
Just stay clear of them.

No, There all now installed under ground, but we still have thousands of miles of overhead lines.

Some streets in my area have spiderwebs of wires criss-crossing the road and not particularly high either.

tell you what though, the leccy is fed into my house via an overhead cable, but then again my house is over 100yrs old and apparently one of the neighbours just got one of those new fangled water clauset things installed!
