Water Butts
« on: June 28, 2007, 04:59:15 pm »
Does anyone else use these to store pure water in? Due to the limited opening, im going to have to go for 5 x 210 litre water butts to store my water in, alot cheaper than a tank i have found, only £124.00 from tescos. If its ok to store the water, do i just link the butts up and have a float valve in one of them to shut the system off when all full?? Any help and advice would be great.
Thanks

If you look about i'm sure you can pick up a 2nd hand IBC tank from about £30 upwards.

I used to have a waterbutt to produce my water into but got hold of an IBC advertised in the paper.

I just fill my tank in the van with ordinary tap water now.

The IBC i let fill up with rainwater then filter it through a pair of womans tights into the Waterbutt.
Every now and then i will fill the tank with this rainwater and haven't had any problems as far as i know.
I cleaned my own windows with it and they came up fine.

That sounds interesting. An IBC would be perfect but it would need to be 680mm wide, and they are a metre wide.

i use a water butt and a guy i helped setup only has a side path to store water, so he has 3 X 210 L water butts linked with some 1 " wastepipe, you can buy tank connections for "hot water header tanks" that are ideal to fit on the water butts

he has them slightly staggered with the far end 1 filling up, when its half full it goes into the next and so on, t, it works ok and he seems happy

Even this 600 ltr IBC is 800mm wide so still no good.

I got my 2 x 210 ltr water butts from B&Q they were £24.99 I think, they are joined by a w/butt linking kit from the garden cntr they are joined at the bottom so they fill at the same rate, I do have a float valve in 1 so it stops when its full, I empty them with a sub pump which pumps so quick it will nearly empty 1 before the other has had a chance to catch up, I am thinking of adding another for more storage

Hi Chris, so you connect the butts at the bottom. Also where did you get your transfer pump from if you dont mind me asking. RO Man dont do one and suggested one from a aquatics shop.
