FLOOR STRIPPING PROBLEMS
« on: June 13, 2007, 09:59:37 pm »
Hi

I stripped a floor today for our dentist client we used micare easy strip and the floor is a vinel type. I left it on as stated on the back of the instructions 10.00 to 15.00 minutes. The floor changed colour and whent streaky and patchy what went wrong ? i wiped some of the stripper of with a paper towel and the floor colour came off on to the paper towel. I put more stripper on to try and blend it in this did work to a degree and also looked better when i mopped the polish on.

What can i say if they complain ?

hi

it sounds like you used the product neat and not diluted and, also if striping a floor like vinyl a bit at a time is batter than one big swoop on the job.

kind regards jonny

Always do a tester first!! did you look at the dilution rate? did you completely neutralize the floor afterwards?

Hi all

Thanks for your replies.

I diluted as per instructions 1:5 and left it on for 10.00 minutes the flooring is a rubber type vinel. The room is about 18 foot by 15 and it was micare easy strip i didn’t use a pad because the floor has only been polished once.

My client phoned me on Thursday and they said he is not happy at all apparently it has turned the skirting boards a different colour as well.

What would you do i said i would have a look at it over the weekend

hi

its a fairly ok size room, i dont think you can do anything you can either fob him off with, you will be calling the manufacturer of the floors or the manufacturer of the chemical,

or you can put your hands up and tell him that you will be contacting your insurance company first thing monday morning and try it that way, because im sure its going to cost a bit to replace that floor and get painters in for the skirtings

thats all i can say SORRY :'(

thanx jonny

Bit of a bugger this one mate, however, there are no shortcuts in this game, training has to be figured in for anyone who starts in this business, there is more to stripping/re-sealing and polishing hard floors than first meets the eye, just gotta hope your insurance company does not hang you out to dry, I am assuming that your insurance actually covers you for items being worked upon, and is not one of the cheap deals!

Seriously, contact someone local to sort it out, make sure they know what their doing though, apologise profusely to customer, take the financial hit and walk away, get yourself on a hard floor course asap, and learn your lesson, good luck!

Regards,

Rob

PS.

Skirtings should have been protected before you put stripper on, and all above advice applies assuming that you correctly diluted the stripper, left for reccomended time, and chemical was suitable for the floor, as well as not being a bad batch. Vinyl and rubber floors are quite different, you should not have used stripper on a rubber floor.
A world of difference....

Get on to the firm that sold you the product or the makers of it, they usually have a technical dept or a rep and will probably help you out. There is probably a way out of this (apart from the damaged skirtings) by cutting back and reapplying a finish.

Dont forget that its in the manufacturers interest to keep you as a customer of their products.

As above its difficult to prescribe a remedy to the solution on line without seeing it.

Could be his way of being polite, and now trying to find someone who knows how to deal with the problem before handing you the flick and the bill, so dont be surprised to hear from him again.
