The Filters wont necessarily reduce the TDS VAlue as they are only there to Filter out larger Particles and Chlor. I think that your Membranes are on there last legs, did you exchange the Chlor Filter ? because without one or a spent one your Membranes will Die quickly, Chlor eats away at zthe R/O membranes.
Another point, do you use the System daily ?, if the Membranes are not used forlonger periods then they will dry out and loose ther correct Function. If the are not used fopr a longer period they must be washed out and left in a Desinfection solution.

cheers for the advice - I replaced all the filters inc the chlor one. So maybe a new membrane is due.

I dont use the system everyday but it is never left to go dry, I use it 3-4 days a week.

It produces 400ltrs a day then at the weekend it is just left until I fill the van up and go again.

Would it harm the membrane if the water pressure is left up (i.e. the tap is on but the auto shut off kit kicks in) for approx 3 days?

I'd go for the membrane as well. 50 is too high. How old is your membrane?

No leaving the Pressure on is fine. The danger of Membranes drying out, is more of a problem when the System is not used for longer periods and the water leeks out allowing the Membranes to dry. New Membranes are delivered in a sealed Bag in a water solution! (To stop them drying out).
One thing you could try, is to let your R/O System run for an Hour, but not using Tap water as Feed Water but taking the already purified Water from your Tanks (just make a connection from your Tank Pump to the R/O Water In connection. This will definately clean out all deposits on your Membranes, perhaps the TDS Values will go down. If not then you will need new Membranes.

Wow is that true about membranes drying out Terry?

I have a 40 40 Ro unit and my tds is climbing its now up to 19TDS after going through ro unit. My water from the tap is 89 at the momment.

The thing is before Xmas I was getting 2 TDS after going through the RO with the water about 65 from the tap. In mid January I went on holiday for two weeks so I bought my Ro unit into the house to protect it from the frost. Did not want the frost to damage it.

I changed my filters about a week after coming back off holiday as my tds started to climb. It was around 8 at the begining of Mid Febuary and as rose steadily since. Just over a week ago it was 15. I have tried flushing with pure water but the tds climb continues.

I have had my RO for 17 months and it looks like if you are right I inflicted the damage myself by putting the ro unit inside my nice warm centrally heated house for two weeks. I ALSO DRAINED THE WATER OUT OF THE RO BEFORE SETTING OFF ON MY HOLS.

WHOOPS.

How long can a membrane be expected to last anyway? From memory they are not that dear to buy. Would it not be a good idea to change it once a year or whatever?

..its prob a good idea to change the membrane once a year I just ordered mine at a cost of about 39quid...

I reckon membrane once a year filters 3-6months resin as and when..

Yes the R/O Membranes can dry out, the problem is if the Unit is not used regulary, then it should still be run for an Hour at least once a week. The water left in the Mrembrane Housings is not Pure and will damage the R/O Membranes, especially when they dry out, I know of a few collegues who didnt use there Systems in Winter and after starting up again found the TDS Values much higher and continually getting worse, then you can only change the Membranes. If you go on Holiday or want to store your Unit for a longer period then they must be flushed with a special desinfectant solution; The process is that you take the solution and pump it into thru your system via a 12volt pump (ie. Shurflo) all outgoing Hoses (Pure and waster water) are then directed to a bucket with the Solution so that the Desinfectant solutíon is continually pumped into/thru the System, after 10 mins the System can be shut down and left until needed again. This will guarantee that the Membranes remain at their best. Its quite a simple procedure once understood. I will try and find out the name of this Solution and Post.

I have been checking prices for new membranes for my 40 40 ro. £217.00 is the norm. Spoke to June from gapswater, she certainly knows her onions.

She informed me a 25Ltr bag of resin would last for 32000 ltrs approx if my tds stays at 20.

I use about 3000 ltrs to 3500ltrs a week. So i would be through a bag in 10 weeks.

I have only had one bag of resin since I started wfp 17 months ago and I have enough to refill my cannister one more time.

So ecnomics dictate to change the memmbrane sooner rather then later.

june said a memmbrane could last 10 years if looked after properly.
