Styrene furniture blocks
« on: April 12, 2007, 06:15:48 pm »
How much do you pay for them?

The last time I bought them, they were about £18 for a box.

Does anyone know where to get them at a better price?

buy sheets of 1 inch insulation from the builders merchants, about £6 for a 12ftx8ft sheet, then cut it up as you need it.

I got a pile of styrene sheet once from a custys skip Mike.
Started cutting it up into blocks thinking this will save me a small fortune.
Bits of styrene everywhere and wouldn't stay intact......threw the bloody lot away  ;D

Hi John, i hope your well? Mike is bang on with what he says about the sheets from builders merchants-i do the same. However if you cut it with a saw then it does go everywhere, but if you cut it up with a sharp-bladed stanley knife then its no problem at all.

I may give it a try Damian....perhaps the styrene I was using was not compact enough.

My grandma was from Yorkshire and she used to say, look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves  ;D ;D ;D

Dont use them, cause irreversible impact damage because of weight distribution on such small surface area.
Use flat objects, rags, bin bags, foils etc or similar.
You've been warned!

I have to say I agree with Matt. Some years ago I stopped using foam blocks because of the damage they do to carpets.

this is why i use the insulation sheets, if the object is heavy then use a bigger peice to spread out the wieght.

for something big like a welsh dresser (which has a large floor contact area) I use a sheet off bubble wrap which cover the full area but acts like a glide you can move it with one hand, I get this from the skip behind DFS :D

I find the packing from around fridges and freezers
to be the best as it is very highly compact.
cut with a sharp stanley knife.

the reason i like the bouncy castle material to put under furniture is there is no way a custy can forget its there as they are brightly coloured lol
