Is the towing limit on a van the same as the payload?

no- the towing limit of any vehicle is 80% of its unladen weight. But this all goes ouot the window if the trailer is a twin axle jobby

Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)

The maximum weight of a vehicle, ready for the road, including chassis weight, fuel, oil, water, driver and crew, extra equipment, body and payload.

GVW + maximum trailer weight = Maximum or Gross Train Weight.

Gross (Maximum) Train Weight (GTW)

Maximum permissible weight of a goods vehicle together with it’s trailer and load. This figure must never be exceeded and the maximum trailer weight should never exceed the difference between GTW and the GVW.

Always check with each van manufacturer what the maximum towing limit is for their particular van.

What Van magazine gives the maximum towing limit of a 600kg Berlingo 1.9D and 2.0Hdi as 1100kgs.

The same magazine gives the maximum towing limit of a 1.8TDdi and 1.8TDci  Transit Connect as 800kgs.

The Transit Connect is a heavier van than the Berlingo which impacts on it’s towing limits (2025kg as against 1755kgs).
