Which system do i need ?
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:33:19 pm »
Hi everyone,i have been reading this forum for 10 months now but this is my 1st post.I have been doing trad-part time for 18 months, finally decided to dabble with wfp and go full time if all goes well.A few questions if anyone will be kind enough to answer.
1     the tds of my tap water is 064,will di alone get this down to 000 or would you suggest a ro as well.

2     i will need enough water to do roughly 20 houses per day, most of my round is back to back 3 bed terraces, how much water per day ?

3    would i be okay with a backpack to start with or something like a freedom trolley ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I reckon with a tds of 064 you would be better off going for a 200gpd ro system. It might cost a couple of hundred but I'm very sure it will last for ages until you need to change the filters.

My water Is 026ppm and I now use a 100gpd ro system to purify my water. I was finding that the resin wasn't lasting too long. I have not changed any of my filters as yet in my ro and have made 1000's of litres.

You do 20 per day.

I would say 200L would do you to start off then maybe after a couple of cleans you could knock of 50L.

Yes, no prob!

My ro has a small filter filled with resin. Never changed it yet.

I  get my water down to 000 with di and ro ;)

thanks for the replies- sorry for being a nuisance, still a lot more questions to ask,if i went down the ro route would a 100gpd system take a full 24 hrs to produce 100 gallons of pure water ?

100gallons = 453.6 litres

My water pressure is quite low so it might take me 30 hours to produce 100 gallons.

But you are thinking on the right lines ;)

No electric just pressure unless you have to introduce a mains booster pump

with your tds i would go di only, mine is 106tds out of tap, i'm di only and use 3 bags of resin per year @ around 70 quid each. i use 400ltr tank & use wfp most days. this way you have pure water on demand & less hassle, you can fill your tank up if you run low from customer outside tap (with permission of course ;)).
i run 2 x 10ltr di vessels in sequence for far better resin economy. cleantech sell reconditioned di vessels for 50 quid which is very good value.

with a tds of 64 from tap cost of resin is not of importance as your wfp system will pay for itself many times over.

Think i'm going to go down the di route as i have nowhere to put a holding tank, now i need to decide whether to go for a backpack or a trolley system,i have seen a freedom trolley on ebay for £995,do you experienced wfp'ers think this is a good buy as you can get a backpack starter kit for half the money.

Hi there

i have the freedom trolley and the backpack, im only off m1 junction 26 not far from you if you want to come and have a look at both systems you are most welcome.  It will give you a better idea of what you need, i myself only use the freedom trolley as it suits all my work you can put the 25ltr containers straight into it and also has a pole carrier.
At the end of the day its what is best for your work and affordability

Thanks for the offer brett, bit tied down at moment due to work and being behind on round because of this lovely weather. Most of my round is back to back terraced houses, all of which are only five minutes walk from home,so both systems would work well for me,its just the thought of continually refilling backpack thats making me lean towards the trolley. How many houses could i do(tops only-4 windows) before refilling backpack and trolley ?

If you got a larger trolley like the omnitrolly 50ltr model you would get more done before having to refill with water.
have a look at omnipole.com you will find they are a good price.

Another good trolley is the APS trolley which holds 70 ltrs of water but i don't know the website address for these.

I would have a look at all the differant trolleys before making your choice and then you will know which one suits your type of work the best.

Myself i would not use a backpack but some swear by them.
These only hold about 18ltrs of water though and would not recommend wearing one on your back for too long as im sure you will regret it in years to come.
