Health and Safety
« on: February 21, 2007, 01:00:35 am »
I run a smallish general office cleaning company with about 25 employees. I'm tackling Health and Safety at the moment and want to make sure we do a very good job on it rather than just making sure we are legal etc. I think that having good health and safety is something that will not only reduce risk for the business but also show to our staff that we take their safety seriously and that it's core to our values as an organisation.

What i wanted to know is if anyone can reccomend a good company to take us through this process? What i think we need is a Policy (any good H and S company should have a very good template as a starter), including CoSHH. I also need my supervisors to be trained so that they can ensure policy is followed at our clients sites. also the supervisors will do the health and safety training for the staff.

I want to achieve this on a fixed fee split by the policy itself and then per training session.

What is the best way to show that you are h&S complient? does the safe contractor acreditation do this for you?

thanks

you've 25 employees and no h+S policy??? Your not running a very tight ship, the law requires a written health and safety policy statement when you've got 5 or more employees. Your better off contacts the HSE themselves and find out what they require before you get nicked!!!

Find yourself a good local H & S Consultant, he/she will do all your policies for you and ensure you are on the right side of the law.

We employ a IOSH consultant on a retainer, costs me £5 per employee per month, min £20

He has written all our policies and also done some training for us.

Excellent value for money

Lionheart, that sounds like good value. can you give us his details.

From my research, Peninsula came in quite expensive, citation didn't get back to us. favourite so far is hastam but Lionheart's option sounds very appealing.

lionheart that sounds brilliant , we have just undergone a complete overhaul of our safety policies , risk assesments and employment policies it was done by a firm called MENTOR they also provide the service of going to court with you and paying the costs if you have followed their advice, the main policies and employment hand books where written by them after a consultation but the risk assesments and methods of work had to be done by ourselves but with a lot of guidance and advice from one of their H and S guys who came and looked at a number of our sites and what our men where doing , on the H and S side they offer a 24 hour call out if a incident happens at one of the sites where their advice is needed.
This service doesnt come cheap we currently have around 19 employees some of these being part time and the cost of this service is over £400 a month which is apprximately £20 a month per employee , but the way things are going with employment law and H and S law plus the sue you culture we could not see an alternative but to put it in place .
It seems to be getting harder and harder to run a business legitimately and the government dont seem to be listening to small business concerns over this red tape cost.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

Hi

A while ago i was sent an information pack from a company called Safe Contractor and from what i can gather it entails you the business owner completing online training and exams and when you pass you are then able to use the Safe Contractors logo on your business letterhead.
If you have the use of this logo you then dont need to provide Health & Safety information to the client as this alone proves you know all there to know to be a safe contractor, i have been seriously thinking about it myself as even though we have our own policys it could possibly give the client peace of mind.
Correct me if im wrong, does anyone have any information on this company?

Applied online for membership of safe contractor about a month ago, heard nothing since!
Don't have the details now.

Just look at the HSE website, everything is there.
Also, check out the DTI site - very informative.

Hi

I have used a company that has been absolutely fantastic.
Not the cheapest and no the most expensive.
Speak to Ken at http://www.rams.org.uk/

Great service and reasonably priced.

Hope this helps
