merlin systems
« on: December 19, 2006, 09:11:37 pm »
evening all,
I need to get a bigger ro system and currently have an ro 200, with a pump attatched producing 300 gallons a day. however this in not enough and have seen that you can get anro 450 (45o litres) for the same price as a merlin (750 litres).
how comes there the same price and whats the differnce between them, other than the amount they produce.
It looks like im gonna be totally stuffed now for christmas as im running on empty.

And while im here id like to wish you all a very merry christmas !

Hi Gifted - the merlin is rated as a 720USgallon/day RO system, which is 720*3.78 = 2721.6ltrs per day.

Our water pressure is 45psi and inlet tds is between 300 and 350ppm, we get around 2000ltrs product per day.

Overall the merlin represents great value for money, is simple to maintain and doesn't need a booster pump under normal conditions, by the way our product water from the merlin is 4ppm.

Go on, get one, you'll be glad you did.

hi jm123, I've a merlin too, does me fine and is quick, however I've a supply tds of 350 - 400 ppm and the best product out I get is 30 ppm with 80 psi ! I understand from what you've said before that it depends on what your tds is made up from in your water supply area but just wondered if you could advise on anything that would get it lower ? ( i already have an additional pre sediment filter)
thanks
Simon

Hi Cyberseye - your best bet would be a softener unit, these can be quite expensive though.  Other than that you could upgrade to a 4040RO but if you do, don't just buy any RO, they're not all the same.  In our experience (having supplied Dow, Filmtec, Desal etc) the low pressure desal AK membranes perform best.

If you would prefer to go for a softener then have a look here http://www.freshwatersystems.co.uk/series_comsoft_simplex.htm

basically a resin vessel filled with softener resin, these vessels have a control valve to monitor flow rate, time, volume of water treated etc.

Give steve at Freshwater systems a call, he knows his stuff and would be the best to advise you on a softener.

Hi Giftedk,

we have found that the the 450 units can produce about 1300 litres per day on good water pressure, but sometimes they struggle to give 800 litres per day. The Merlin on the other hand finds it easy to give 2000 litres a day even on low pressure.

If as JM says I could get a 4tds out of a merlin I'd seriously consider one but if like cybersye its at 30tds then I'd think twice, but till you get one and try it who knows!
My water in is 220tds and pressure is 65psi.

its all down to the chemical make-up of your inlet water.  We have supplied merlin ro units to customers who get 1ppm from it on low pressure after 5/6 months of use and others who get 15ppm from new.  Overall the merlin is the closest to a 4040 RO as you can get without actually buying a 4040 (or any 4inch membrane whether it be a 4040 or a 4021 etc)

I have a desal 4040. Water in is around 180-200PPM. Comes out at 26PPM. I would have gone for a merlin if I had known as the 4040 was much more expensive.

Hi all

I have a ro man 450 and this produces around 1250 litres per day with the aid of a pump that I bought some weeks ago.

I have a reading of 360 to 400 in and a reading of 000 out.

I would say the merlin units maybe faster  but you still have to polish the water before usage. With an 450 ro man they are ready to just use.

maybe in your case but in the majority of cases you will still need to polish the water (via di) after the ro.

The 450 Ro man has a DI fitted as standard to it and that's how you get a reading of zero.  ;D

I thought you were saying you get a tds of 0ppm from the membranes - well of course you will get 0ppm after the resin - for a little while anyway.

Alex, is it a Merlin system you use on your 500ltr van mount? and would that be a 4040 membrane? (very new trying to learn)
