IF you had to choose 1 pole size for residential which would it be?  19' or 24'?

2/3ft for the ground floor and a 26ft to reach over conservatories/porch roofs to do the windows above.

24' .  I started by using an 18' but there were too many windows it couldn't reach.  I may invest in a lightweight 18' as well in the new year as there are many jobs where I could get away with it.

If I had to choose one pole it would be an 18ft universal, cheap, reliable and able to reach 95% of all domestic work.

I agree, 18ft will do 95% of work .
Small enough to manage ground level
Light enough to use all day.

Since your only getting one pole

A 12ft is easier for doing ground level

Some of my houses are monsters, yes, two story, but they are like 3 story high, so I would need a 24' one I reckon.

use 12ft and 18ft and keep a 30ft in the van for the very occasional use.

12ft is good for most 2 storey work but 18ft pretty much covers it all.

just get the monster out the van if need be for some three storey work or hard to reach over conservatorys if needed but the 18ft pretty much can do all of that as well.

I have only got an 18ft pole at the moment... It's fine for most of the houses that I clean.

But, I am going to soon invest in a 24ft or 30ft pole as I have a few houses with very high 3rd storey windows that I can't quite reach with the 18ft pole.

24' brodex ecolite glass fibre, used mine from 9.45 to 2.40 (wit a couple of breaks obviously), arms as fresh as a daisy (I'm  superman's cousin don't you know!)

After snapping my 18' pole i replaced it with a 20' pole.

Speaking as a non window cleaner, I purchased a 12 ft residential system for my own use.

I find that I need an umbrella when cleaning upstairs windows as I end up standing almost directly under the brush.

Also just not long enough to easily clean windows over conservatory.

I wish I had spent more & purchased an 18ft like AlexG suggests.

I find what suits me best for domestics is a 24ft pole reach's over conservatories easily where with an 18ft it can be a struggle.

Do people have the Swan neck on their 18' - 20' - 24' poles?

I've only got one on my 30' pole. The rest have the plastic angle adaptor.

I have a swan neck on all my poles as it allows you to utilise the full length of the pole even when cleaning windows with deep sills.

I have a 4" pole (peewee) for downstairs which the wife does most of the time.
A 12" (noodle) which covers most properties and a 24" (Jonny Holmes) for when you need that bit of extra length. 
When I am cleaning on my own I just use the 12" for downs and tops but it can be a bit awkward sometimes as it is in 6" sections.
The names in brackets is what the misses has named the poles.
