E x p e n s i v e

Maybe it's just my dirty - well, slightly soiled - mind, but you might have spelt it  E x p e n i s i v e ? easily done when you're battering away at a thingy - what happened there?  ;)

Hi all
I,m trying to create an leaflet and the printer wants to charge for "artwork" if I supply as anything other than a pdf file. As I would like to try several variations this would be very costly. What do I need to create a pdf file or convert a MS Publisher file.
Regards Mal

Hi Malc

If your trying to save cost and design your own leaflet just make sure that when you send it to the printer as a PDF that

A) its all saved down in CMYK otherwise the colours won't split properly.
B) If its in a format like a PDF all fonts need to be embedded.
C) All images are saved at 300dpi

To be quite honest the easiest and safest way to supply artwork for a flyer will be to create a 300dpi CMYK .eps or .tiff or .jpg file

you cansend Quark files, word publisher and any others but i'll guarentte they'll be problems at thier end with images and fonts.

you need to talk to your printer and get thier spec sheet on how they want it to be supplied.

If you need any help with the above then i'll gladly help out.

You can go to

http://www.primopdf.com/

and download Primo PDF.  It's free.
After installing the software, you create the PDF file not by direct saving but by doing FILE > PRINT.
In your options on printer selection, there should now be a selection for Primo PDF.  Effectively, you "print" the file to your hard drive.  Make sure that you save the file securely from which the PDF was made as you won't be able to alter the PDF - at least not without a lot of expense and hassle.
I use Primo PDF regularly and it seems just fine.

another decent windows application  ;)

can't use it myself as i use macs, hows the print quality from this if your creating from microsoft applications? if you don't save images as 300 dpi they will be pixelated.

what format do you normally convert from shiner?

Print quality has seemed fine when converting but I use very little in the way of graphics so can't vouch for those.  I have converted from a number of different formats including .pub (MS Publisher), .wks (MS Works - a contradiction in terms if I ever saw one), .doc, .txt and several different picture formats.  Basically, anything that is printable has a decent chance of being a .pdf - including a webpage.  Sometimes the dimensions may get messed up so it may sometimes be necessary to rescale.

ok, it proberly could be printed but its all to what quality? I'm not knocking the application if it works then great. just get nervous when people start converting .doc with clipart images as these really could print out very poor as normally in a low res format same as web pages.

if your using little graphics and just text then you have a more success rate than if you use a lot of images.

Well I suppose the only way is to try it and see if it works OK.  Nothing lost except a bit of time and a piece of paper.  The jpegs I have used in PDF have seemed OK on their own but I've no idea how .wmf or .bmp would fare.

ah thats the problem shiner, i think we may have to agree to disagree on this one. i have some good experience in print and when you print on paper from a printer doesn't give you a true guide of what may/will print to film/plates.

If your not after a perfect peice of artwork then you will probably get away with converting word files and what not but it really isn't good practice from the experience i've had. I really can't be bothered to bang on about it anymore. just sharing with you my knowledge.

as for .BPM need to saved down at 1200dpi to try and gain any real smooth edge other wise it will be jagged and pixelated to f**k
