Speed Limit

One of my customers has an Expert van like mine, and he has just been done for speeding on the A5 near Shrewsbury.

He was doing 58mph on a single lane A road, thats one lane each way, however he rang DVLA as he thought the speed limit was 60mph.

The DVlA said it was 60 write to the camera people, they replied and told him it was 50mph for a van over two metric tons. He contacted parlement and there is an act which sates. Vans over 2 metric tons speed limit on sigle lane road is 50mph dual carrage ways 60mph motorways 70mph.

I did not know this did you?

I posted about this barely a couple of weeks ago under a thread called "Speed limits for larger vans".  I posted it because it surprised me too.  I had always thought that the additional speed restrictions only kicked in above 7.5 tonnes.  In fact, I believe that it WAS 7.5 tonnes but changed at some point with little or no publicity.
I imagine that your friend was nicked by a handheld camera or was followed by a police car as I don't think an automatic GATSO would have detected this?

I don't know if some of you guy's know this but the same speed limits apply if you are towing a trailer even with a car.

I would check your manual out as i would be very surprised if the kerb weight on an Expert van is 2 ton  :o my truck only weighs in at 1875kg and its miles bigger than an Expert van.

Hi,I think you will find they are Wrong,A single lane main road is 60mph,for all car  and car derived vans upto 2 tonnes max. weight...50 mph if towing a trailer And the above quote is from the highway code website,under S for speed limits.
I say there wrong as a Partner weighs in at less than 2 tonnes.

Hi,I have,and I still think there wrong,unless a Partner comes in at over 2 tonnes,and I didnt think they did,
Im not saying the mph is wrong as I have quoted the same,I am saying they have got the vehicle weight wrong...........

I would be careful as i know a couple of drivers who have been caught by gatso camera's in 7.5 tonners, im not sure how they work/know but some of them do.

I was told by a AA bloke if a van had windows in the rear doors the restricted speed limits dont count but i think he's full of it !!

This guy had windows in the back of his Expert. But he said if it had been the people carying version the limit would not applly, even though it is the same weight.

Must say it was news to me as I went past a mobile van the other day and was doing 68mph thinking 70 was the limit. Will have to see if I get a ticket. :(

I just looked it up on www.whatvan.co.uk

There are different versions of the Expert but the lowest GVW is 2205 kilos.  Looks like the nicking will stand.

Gross weight means what a vehicle would weigh in at when its fully loaded.

I realise the difference between kerb weight and gross vehicle weight Ronaldo but I don't think anyone else mentioned kerb weight.  The lower speed limits are based on GVW if the link below is correct.  Have a look at the bit immediately below the speed limit table.

I know it seems unfair as many of the vehicles (including mine) are below 2 tonnes kerb weight but higher than 2 tonnes GVW.
