before I tear my hair out, help needed
« on: October 15, 2006, 08:21:10 pm »
Hi lads,

Bear with me I know this sort of question has been asked before but here goes,

I've set myself up with a backpack wfp, unger pole, vikan brush with hozelock micro jets.

Now through my so far limited experience I've noticed some glass sheets and as long as the frame above is clean there is not much chance of any spotting :),and of course some glass beads, but even if the frame above is very clean there can still be spotting :(.

I know this because I have cleaned my own window frames to death but when I spray my pure water on to either scrub and rinse or just rinse I get spotting ???.My windows are the plastic double glazed sort. ;D

Now is it the fact that some windows will always spot or am I doing something fundamentally wrong.I think I've done every technic that I've read about on this site.

But obviously I must be doing something wrong because someone on here earlier said they have never had spots :o(easy clean windows). But also from what I've read on here the very experienced Jeff Brimble has built a round based on glass that sheets  8),which must say something ;)

So do you find that beading glass is a major problem or if not what is the best way to clean and rinse this type of glass.

I hope some kind gent can point me in the right direction or otherwise all my nice new shiny gear might be finding it's way on to ebay :'(

By the way I've been w/c for 26 years and am just looking to make life easier in my old age(47),cheers and thanks for reading ;D

3 points I would check -

What's your tds coming out the brush? - fill a glass from the brush jets, dip your tds meter and let us know.

How long since you've cleaned your own windows with squeegee and w/up liquid? If recent then the first two or three cleans may spot with the residue leeching out from the rubber seals on the upvc windows.

How old are your upvc windows? If the seals are perished (run black muck when you run a damp scrim around them) they will cause spotting too.
It's a game of three halves!

Hello sorry to hear of this problem.

My water is firstly put through an ro and bought down to 25 then through a di down to 000.I dont use fan jets as ive always preffered pencil jets.

You will not get spots from using pure water if you rinse properlly.

I have cleaned every different window you can find...old painted ones..self cleaning ones...lead........metal framed that are oxodising etc etc and as long as you rinse and your water is 000 you should not have a problem with spots.

Spots are not caused by your "pure water" spots are trapped particles of dirt so therfore you have left dirt on the glass or your water has a high tdi reading meaning you have mineral deposits in your water.

So if your water is above whats reasonable for window cleaning 000-010 max you wont get spots.

now what Mac has said can happen but you have to be carefull when rinsing older windows etc as water on painted frames.old rubber will cause solids to run onto the glass but again rinse propperlly and you should be ok......if in doubt squeegee

Also when you clean the top part of the frame make sure you have scrubbed every little cob web away this will leave streaky marks definatley as the web will have stuck to the glass with water running of it

beading glass ...this is glass with a coated oily film on the outside.... beading glass will still come up spot free you just have to rinse differently

after you have scrubbed the frame and glass you can rinse up and down...so put your brush top left corner..on first clean you will need to have your brush off the glass then go left to right or staight down if in doubt do it a couple of times ..i will try and put a video up here this week

thanks for your replies,

I only have a inline tds metre, which reads 000,should I really have a hand held one to measure tds at brush? But I did several tops on Friday with the same batch of water and they were good, these were of the sheeting type ;D

My windows have been cleaned  ::) wfp about ten times since cleaning with squeegie the frames are spotless(which is more than I can say for the glass). There about ten years old but the seals don't seem that bad.

A video would be a great idea, hope you can do it Easyclean

yes you need a hand held tdi from the brush head. You could have all sorts of dirt and debris in your brush head, jet holes, down your goose neck etc.

I will do 2 videos one rinsing side to side and one rinsing up and down each one works the same just which one you feel comfortable with.

This might sound thick when you say rinsing is that  different from cleaning, and do you first apply the water without touching the glass i.e couple centimetre away.

Yes rinsing is different . cleaning is scrubbing with the brush on the glass but remember you are aggitaing dirt not getting it off so once you have srcubbed enough you have to rinse the glass after to make sure you havent left any dirt particles.

Say you do it by hand the aplicator moves and aggitates the dirt...its the squeegge that gets the dirt and water off

I got a hand held tds,in just over a day from cleantech very impressive.

The reading at the brush was 000 so I've been out today doing afew tops. But like before the windows that sheet were good but the beading type were quite bad.

Spent loads of time explaining to one of my customers all about wfp,do the job then go back to check its ok, but its not.I did give it another rinse and it came up better but you do feel a bit of an idiot, I've never had to re clean a window before, but I suppose its all part of the learning process.

I think I need a better rinsing technique for windows that bead ,any more tips would be most welcome, thanks

without actually showing you its hard to explain how to rinse beading glass. The only other thing i can suggest is to leave your brush on the glass and then move it left to right until you reach the bottom
