Go cardless and direct debit question
« on: March 13, 2025, 07:25:42 am »
Hi All,

I’m being forced by my accountant to move into the 21st century…… kind of.

With the new accounting rules coming into play in 2026 for self assessment, and the need for your accountant to have access to software, plus paying tax bill every 3 months, I now need to GET accountant software compared to my spreadsheets just now.

I’m planning on trying to move over to direct debit or atleast offering it as my main payment method. I feel like with the changes I’m having to implement to my book keeping I might aswell implement another.

Currently it takes me a fair bit of time each morning marking of dozens of payments to update my spreadsheets. One click GC direct debit would be nice.

I’m going to give squeegee a go for the client management and GC integration.

Quick question for direct debit users…..

When you receive money from go cardless, how does that process work? Is it held into a go cardless account, and then you withdraw it your bank account?

Does it come into your bank account in one lump sum? Or individual payments?

I’m trying to factor in the fees, and at the moment my business account charges me 0.35p for each debit that comes in.

If I receive say £300 in one lump sum, then I still only get charged 0.35p. Whereas now I’m being charged 0.35p for each individual customer.

Hope that makes sense?

Thanks for any help guys.

Go cardless, each customer has there own account and payment is made to your bank account.

So if you raise a invoice for Mrs Jones roughly 7 days later go cardless emails you saying you have a payment from Mrs Jones £30.

Thanks Roy! Good to know. Looks like I will still get hit with individual bank charges with each customer too.

Is it simple enough to change your bank account details on go cardless? Or does each customer need to sign a new mandate?

I might look into a less expensive business account. It’s just a faff to give everyone new details.

Change your bank, Barclays don’t and many other don’t charge for receiving or making transfers.
Why introduce GC who make you wait a week for your money and take a fee.
I had 30 on GC and now it’s just 3.
Just give your customers your new bank details and ask them to transfer.

Change bank. I changed my business account from RBS to Santander years ago as RBS were charging for each transaction, Santander is £7.50 per month unlimited transactions.

Rob  Morgan who built Cleaner planner is building a new software program called Overture for  MTD as we will all be forced into submitting accounts every 3 months...

I'll have to do this from April 2027 and I'm sure Rob will make it easier for all of us!

Like was recently discussed on here, once the actual requirements for Making Tax Digital are confirmed, all of the round software systems will implement this. Prices will no doubt go up though.

Cleaner planner won't....

Rob is building Overture to make it easier to submit accounts to HMRC and cut down admin (esp for sole traders who do their own accounts)and make an updated version of CP.Price will be very reasonable for guys like me but obviously it'll rise the bigger your business is.

It's not quite that bad. GC pays you all the payments they collect on a particular day in one hit, so you only receive a single payment even if a hundred customers pay you on the same day.

I’ll be honest I couldn’t be bothered reading entire else replies so what I am about to say may have been covered.

First - change your bank, you shouldn’t be paying for money coming into your account ! That’s a joke. Mine don’t charge for money in or out!

Second, if you moving to squeegee - I use them and really rate it, they also integrate with strip for card payments, I’d really consider this rather than gocardless, once you have been a stripe customer for a while they offer same day pay out so your not waiting a week like you do with GC.

If your going with GC, you mark the job as completed and they collect payment 3 working days later from the customer. They then hold the money for a few days, and you get a bundled payout, you can however change the payment terms, if you would rather have all funds payed out once per month for example you can set that to happen. I personally want MY money as soon as possible open for payment to come as soon as possible, which is generally 1 week later. This is why I have switched to stripe, I do a job today and the payment is in my account TODAY! Absolute winner.
Today is the good old days of the future... Enjoy today tomorrow can only be worse

Interesting!

Does stripe operate similar to GC? Or does a customer have to give the go ahead after each clean?
