Battery question?
« on: August 29, 2023, 05:46:48 pm »
My main van is off the road so have had to lash up my temporary spare van with the old fashioned leisure battery set up.
I was wondering if it was possible to use the battery sight glass to determine if a charge was due? I’m using a 115 amp sealed battery. Would seem over the top to charge it every night.

Depending on the condition of the batter and  what you are running off it charge it every other day should be fine if it’s only a pump and reel if it’s just a pump probably get away with every 2-3 day and charge .

I charge mine every night.

Do you have to bring the battery inside to charge it? That might change things.

If you can just put an extension reel in the back of the van and plug it in, then I’d do that every night.

This is just my opinion, DJW and the way I see it. It doesn't mean I'm right, but it also doesn't mean I'm wrong.

There are lots of things we have to do every day in our business. We balance our float against the day's work every day; we check to see whose paid us online every day; we fill our van every morning or afternoon with water, and work to a cleaning schedule every day. When out, we pull the hose off our reels and rewind it in when finished, numerous times a day. In winter, we have to plug in a heater virtually every night to prevent our system from freezing. It's just part of the job.

So why would recharging a battery every night seem over the top? The way I see it is that it's just another one of the many chores a day we have to do to continue working.

Battery manufacturers say that a leisure battery should be recharged asap after use. This reduces sulphation and our battery's last longer.

What we have to do every day doesn't take long. I think of what time my daughter-in-law sets off to work in the morning and what time she gets in, in the evening. Every day, she spends on average about an hour and a half on the road travelling. I just think how fortunate I am not having to do that.

I could charge every night. What I’m getting at is that the battery has a sight glass showing the state of the battery charge. A days work today and it’s still green.
I’m wondering if it could be used as a guide of when to charge?

My Ultra reliable Toyota Hiace is off the road. Ignition lock is worn out. Waiting for a new barrel to come from Japan. If I need new keys too they are £170 each!  :o

Not sure how accurate the gauge is. Unless it is a right faff I would simply charge battery every night to be on safe side. I am able to run an extension lead out to my van so for me it is quite simple.

Even if you dont charge your regular van every night, youve already said this is temporary so whats the harm in doing it every night for a short period, just lazy not to do it imo better to be safe than sorry. You`ll be ped off if you get half way through a day and the battery dies.

you have a boiler though this will take a lot more juice out of a battery so yes it’s best to charge that every day

I've just changed my system batteries(2 x105ah numax leisure/starter batteries).I charge them every night plus I have a smart charger topping them up during the day while the engines running.

They last around 3 years before I need to replace them.
price higher/work harder!
