Reverse lights temperamental 🤦‍♂️
« on: November 21, 2022, 05:49:35 pm »
Advice please from ex mechanics or van knowledgeable folk.

Today I had my fiat doblo 90 multi jet serviced

Guy I use I think is a decent guy.

I’ve noticed reverse lights are only coming on
60% of the time.
My wife noticed the issue when I was parking

I don’t know if this was happening before the service 🤔

Just lucky wife spotted (she always notices things and there always bad news 😅

Is this something that the mechanic could have caused?

I’m guessing reverse switch / I’m clueless but think this is in gear box.

I was off today-heavy rain and luckily text mechanic early Sunday and he had a slot today.

But now I’ll have to go back 🤦‍♂️
For fixing problem.
It is a MOT fail

All I can do is stick on hazard lights as I’m reversing

There’s no way of knowing if reverse lights have come on or not 🤦‍♂️

Thanks
Lee

Just had the same on our car. Took light off to get bulb out, bulb was fine, it was the holder/connector that was full of dirt. Blew it out then sprayed wd40 into it and bingo... working again.😎👌

Hello winpo
Guess you have 1 reverse light

I have x2 haven’t had bulbs out

But thinking reverse switch
As thinking unlikely to be two faulty/ dirty bulb holders at the same time

But I’m no engineer

Well done for fixing yours 👍

If one light faulty you may lose both

Also it could be the sensor in the box not quite making a connection - had this many years ago - was a simple fix

No your mechanic wouldn’t have caused it

Hello Smudger

Spoke with the mechanic earlier
He left my van outside lock up finished.

He was out on a call out
So didn’t to speak this afternoon

He said he noticed reverse switch

I’m getting it sorted with MOT in January after Christmas with him.

Hazard lights will be put on when reversing 👍

Don’t really want to take anytime off now
Thanks

Lost the reversing lights on my MK2 Ranger when we had the gearbox out a few years back.
Extremely annoying as they were excellent lights.

Now use hazard lights for maneuvering.

Fortunately, it's not an MOT failure.

It didn't used to be an mot failure but they keep changing things.

Been told it’s not a MOT failure 🤔

But I’m surprised at that 😳

It's only an MOT failure on vehicles first used after 1 September 2009.

None of mine are that new.

I did notice though that all trailers over 750 kg require at least one reversing light.

Sounds like it’s the switch in the gearbox , should be a relatively  easy fix and not very expensive either

I guess so. 😂
I was asking myself: if I'm towing a caravan, what good would reversing lights have as the bulk of the caravan would surely make visibility non existent when reversing.

I think it’s more as a signal to other drivers, as they would be unable to see the reversing lights on the car.
