i put around £120  worth of diesel a month in my van...this runs my diesel heater every working day and driving about so it works out around £4 or £5 a day to run the heater.....

ive had my heater over 4 years now and had a new burner and glow pin  fitted after 3 years as well as a little pipe alteration, ive also replaced a few fuses and fuse holders..so ive spent around £450 in 3 years on repairs....

the problem with the pure freedom heaters is they dont plumb them into your diesel tank so you ll have to fill it up separately

Difficult to be exact on fuel usage but the book says 1.1 ltr per hour I think it’s probably 1.5  at a guess but it also depends on what temperature you run it at , had all the internals replaced on one of my boilers after 12,000 hours run time cost around 1k to replace everything but could have had it done cheaper but after 6 years very heavy usage I was more than happy to replace it .

Same as Daz for me.

About £5 per day, I use it every day, I’ve never touched the system in 3 years.

I’m getting it serviced next month by grippatank for about £500 just to keep it tickaty boo. It’s running sweet as a nut though.

I’d honestly go for grippatank. They’re service is top notch, and they know these heated systems like the back of their hands.

Yes....in fact its more beneficial in the warmer months for all the insect spots, pollen, snail trails, bird muck, etc that we all tend to have more of on the glass/frames.....

If it isn’t broke don’t fix it , try phoning an independent wabasto dealer and they will tell you there is nothing to service it either works or it doesn’t , mine lasted over 6 years and 12,000 hours run time  if I had had it serviced every year as some claim it should be that would have cost in the region on £3,000  absolute ripoff and totally unnecessary.

My diesel heater consumes more diesel than my van uses a day.  :D

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but in the early days, suppliers used 5kw Webasto diesel heaters for single operator use and 9kw for twin operator systems. PF did this as well.

A single operator system was cheaper as it only had one heat exchanger and mixer valve. The 5kw is a much cheaper diesel heater, so this is reflected in the sales price.

A two-man system has 2 heat exchangers and mixer valves, as well as the more expensive 9kw diesel heater.

It would also be interesting to see what diesel heaters are being sourced to provide the heat. Webasto is a well respected diesel furnace supplier. However, there are also Chinese copies of the previous Webasto Thermo Top C (5kw) and the Thermo 90ST (9kw.)
I'm not sure if this is approved (or made under licence) by Webasto or not.

I wont be touching grippatank with a barge pole , they have screwed up every order i have ever given them , customer service is awful .

Just to clarify, for the purposes of a ball park running cost figure...
I've seen various costs quoted for initial purchase price right upto 10k but 5k seems to be the one  previously most quoted, so at 5k for a system that will last 6 years, at a fiver a day in fuel with a  £500  yearly service based on a  5 day 48 week working year we're looking at £52.77 a week running cost over using a cold water system. Is that a fair assumption? No hidden agenda from me on this just good to have an adult conversation and make informed opinions based on facts rather than what usually happens when Nigels around.

A hot water system will last longer than 6 years...mines over 4 years old now...I fully expect it to last 10 years...its cost me 5k including fitting and including a new burner and a few other bits and bobs at 3 years old...it costs me less than a grand a year in fuel,no need for a service every year.....

Over the course of 10 years it works out at around £30 per week....this includes purchase, fitting, running costs and the odd service...

So less than £8 a day(going off a 4 day week which is standard for me these days)

How easy is it to make any extra £8 a day?in my world its very easy....well worth it for hot water every day all year round...

Most days are trouble free...i just press a button and 15 mins later I have a hot hose reel ready for my first job of the day.....

In view of another thread on here, I would make sure I know what make of diesel heater the supplier you choose is fitting before you sign on the dotted line.

http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=221888.0

I did hear about another supplier who was fitting Chinese made heaters to their units,  no names mentioned as I'm not 100% sure if it's correct or not.

My costs are similar to Daz. Although I work longer hours so my fuel cost is a bit more.

For me, three years in, the benefits far outweigh the cost.

Plus you have to factor in how many days you lose  to icy weather? In Scotland it’s always a few, iced up conservatories and veluxs that would snooker me, now I can work no problem. That in effect reduces the cost as your making money where previously you wouldn’t be.

I’d say £8 per day is a good estimate. I don’t notice it though. One price rise or new job picked up per day and that’s it paid for, but the rest of your working life is more comfortable. (Warm hoses, eaiser cleaning)

Then there’s the age old argument…. Are your faster with hot water? If you are and can squeeze in just one extra job per day then essentially the heater and hot water is free.

If mine packed in I’d buy a new one in a heart beat.

I’d hate to have a hot water heater!
Any excuse and I can take the day off, sod going out in snow and ice when I can stay in-front of the log fire.

I don't work in snow either...more worried about having a smash in the van when it's too icy.... ;D
