Transit Hybrid - will it work with leisure batteries ?

Okay - been looking at replacing the old Citroen Dispatch for several weeks - just not found the right combination of size, age and mileage until now

the local commercial van and truck dealer has sourced me a 350 MWB 13 plate with 40k on the clock - so far so good but its a hybrid - I can only find minimal info on these and its a retro fit - it seems to work like kers where it stores up power then runs off the battery ( or something saving 20% on fuel

my quandaries are - 1. Has any1 used a van like this or know if its any good 2. will it charge leisure batteries to run wfp equipment

Apparently you need something like this. Go to description and it's got a fairly good description. I can't speak from my own experience as well but this is what they suggested when going to a full electric van but also any van with hybrid tech.

My opinion is to stick with a basic van - diesel powered.

The marketing world want to get people involved in new technology so they can create new markets.  The motor industry is very good at that. Its needs to continually reinvent itself to keep growing.

Limited info seems to indicate the voltages of these electric battery packs at around 400v.  I would imagine the alternator on the engine would generate a much higher voltage than 12v. 

Now somewhere in the system there must be 12v electrics to run some 'normal' systems.  Personally this is just too complex for us window cleaning mortals to understand, so I would steer clear of it.

I don't care what anyone says about the future of Hybrid but if you found it wasn't suitable for your business then its going to be hard to find a buyer for it.  Its an odd ball - not to be confused with Odd Bod.  ;D

You don't say if the motor is diesel or petrol. If its petrol I distinctly remember a customer bought one of the first petrol engined Honda hybrids. It had a 1400cc engine. It was marketed as very fuel efficient. If memory serves me it gave him somewhere in the region of 32 MPG on a long run. The equivalent diesel was 50MPG. 
After 3 years he couldn't sell it.

Its much more expensive than a Sterling Battery to Battery charger. I have a BB1260 and it works extremely well.

diesel ( well I presume so   :-\)
I have found out a little more - they are EcoBlue engines - belt driven ( belt runs inside the engine in oil )

Spruce - I take your point - electrics are not a strong subject for me so this is totally baffling

I use a BB1230 smart charger, works very well for Euro 5 & 6 engines.
 Had a hybrid car, started off good but eventually started going downhill rather rapidly with mpg and other troubles. I managed to trade in for a diesel so happy again as got a good deal. Garage couldn't sell the hybrid for almost two years despite many buyers viewing it.
I would stay clear of hybrids and electric cars/vans until technology improves plenty more. Secondhand market for these type of vehicles is terrible. I will stick to diesels until it's time to hand in my driving licence.

In very limited areas ev's have their place.

Ford new hybrid custom van is petrol driven.

My view is to stay with what 99% of the population use and let the remaining ones test these innovations in the field.

I was working for Citroen when they bought out the first electric Berlingo van. It sounded good on paper but it was a disaster in application.

It's left me with a negative view of both hybrids and electric vehicles.

IMO the shift away from electric will happen in the future. Its all about energy density.

Personally I dont think there will be an electric revolution any time soon..too much investment and infrastructure is needed up and down the country...this virus pandemic has put everything on the backburner for years to come IMO....


Stick with diesel for now.....
price higher/work harder!

Just an update - went to see the van today and not what I expected - its a mk7 with a retro fitting of an electric motor and a stop start module made an installed by Ashwoods

Basically its your standard transit with duratorq engine and an extra electric motor and battery fitted to help drive the rear axle

any thoughts Spruce ?
