Has anyone ever taken on the task of building there own wooden A frame Ladders?
I built mine about four years ago, I had central heating installed, and they removed the storage tank from the loft, the tank was stood on two Lenghts of 4x4 timbers and i stopped the builders throwing them out. I was in my shed one night boared to tears (soap operas on tv) I was looking for something to do and came across these's timbers,
I was in need of a small A frame ladder. About 6' high would do nicely, Measured the timbers and just the right hieght. I found more solid wood timber in my junk box, and started to measure and cut, I now had all the timber i needed to build my A frame. I began by drilling all the holes for the Rungs so they were all in line useing a large forsner bit, once that was done I then took my 6 pieces of timber for the Rungs and began to turn them on my wood lathe, all six different lenghts. I then cut a A shape block of wood and cut a V shape into it (This would be the bit that sat against the frames) I assembed all the pieces and glued it all together,
To make it secure I drilled a couple of hole at the top and a couple down the bottom, both lots just below a Rung and added some threaded bar and bolted it all together, I forgot to mention I shamfered the edges of the lenghts with a router. Once this was all done it was then treated with wood preserver and then put into use,
They have been strored on the top of my car and left out side, for four
years now in all weathers, and used nearly every day, Total cost of the build was £1.50 and that was for the threaded bar, and I suppose I used a £1 worth of electric so total cost about £2.50.
If I can get my camera to talk to my computer I will put a picture on for all to see. I must say that in the four years I have had them, My 3 daughters, wife, myself, and two other professional wc have used them and not one person has fallen off them, unlike the time we used to use step ladders were accidents were all to frequent. all that use out of two lenghts of forty year old timbers.
