School kids wont take our jobs
« on: March 05, 2020, 03:31:13 pm »
Sat in van after just packing up at a house just at the side of a busy school, now home time for the kids.  As a group of young lads walked by, they commented on the van sign saying window cleaner. Then one of the lads said, how much do they cost and the other young lad said around £2.50! To which he replied, i wont be seen dead cleaning windows then  ;D ;D  ;D ;D ;D
( probably kids were under 12 mind you, but i dont think they want to get into window cleaning when they leave school  ;D

My mother's uncle was around 80 years of age. He owned a successful plumbing business in Johannesburg called F A Sharman (Pvt) Ltd.
He visited us when we were on holiday once with his 1957 Dodge, black in colour with airconditioning and a chauffeur.

I was 5 years old and was taken in by all this opulence.

"Uncle Fred, please can you teach me to be a plumber".
"Of course I will. When you finish school just let me know and I will arrange to teach you to be a plumber."

I spent the next few years telling everyone I was going to be a plumber and Uncle Fred was going to teach me. I was going to have a brand new Dodge with airconditioning and my own chauffeur.

Then my mother dropped the bombshell; being a plumber also meant dealing with sewage.  Then and there I no longer wanted to be a plumber. ;D

So there are other things that are involved with kids making a career choice.

Success is 1% inspiration, 98% perspiration and 2% attention to detail!

The older I get, the better I was ;)

It will never lose its image or at least never completely this job or many others,at the end of the day it’s what you earn not what you do.
Would you choose to have a fancy job title and earn 25-30 grand for years or clean windows and have a far better standard of living,I know my choice.

Yeah I know a couple of guys just joined one has been doing it 2 years the other just started doing his training, when they told me what they’d be earning or what they could earn I was surprised the money’s not good.
The only good thing I could take from it was that after 30 years of service you’ve still got plenty of life left when you get your pension if you’ve gone in early enough at say early 20s,the pension system in the police is not as good as it once was either I think they have to now contribute 25-30% of there earnings into there pension which is decided by there union so they have little to no say.

I don't think kids want to work full stop!

I was cleaning recently and next door were having all new gutters and facias fitted.

One of the young lads (probably 18) asked me if 'window cleaning was any good'?

I said 'In the winter you can't work because of the weather, in the summer everyones on holiday, it's not ideal'!

The young lad was like...'bugger that!'

The boss looked at me and smiled and I just smiled back!

"Thank you for calling: if you have a 1st floor flat, mid terraced house, lots of dogs, no parking, no side access, or no sense of humour, please press hold!
For all other enquiries, please press1"

This is a good thing, hence the post. Most feel like this when they consider our work and thats great!! We just need to convince all the others who try their hand at it come summer for silly low prices.

With the exception of Dazmond did any of us want to get into window cleaning when leaving school, let be honest we push a pole because we are too stupid to push a pen.

I would rather push a pole than a pen, a desk job would finish me off. As would driving a coach or bus all day every day, I like the driving as I do now on a casual part time basis, but full time would drive me mad , too much time spent waiting around for people.
Cheers Rich

i just wanted to play drums and sleep with lots of women... ;D...

i went straight into a 55 hour a week nursery/landscaping job straight from school......a few years of that was enough to know i didnt want to be an employee.... ;D

All three of my daughters "wouldn't be seen window cleaning - especially with Dad!"  ;D

Funnily enough the eldest at age 16 soon learned that £7 an hour (12 years ago) was good part time work when she went to college. The next (10  years ago) the same - £8 per hour. And the youngest who was the most adamant she wouldn't be seen window cleaning is now 21 and working with me today (home from university at £10 per hour).

Mind you she does bar work in London when she's at Uni and gets £12.50 an hour and a free drink and meal at the end of her shift.
It's a game of three halves!
