Be carefull laying your hose
« on: October 07, 2019, 12:30:06 pm »
Just had mine wrap round a car and watched my reel being ripped from the van   :D

Luckily I was in a small parking area not a main road.

Also lucky the hose was old and snapped in half or reel would have gone flying down the street

Quite scary

Heard a crunching noise thought someone had crashed, next thing my reel fly's out of the back of the van, oh that crunch was the screws ripping out then lol.

Also luckily I have a spare hose reel in the van

Lucky the hose reel didnt smash any other car either.
Very lucky.

This happened to me once as a cars underbelly protection had come loose and was scraping on the floor and so it hooked under my hose n took it down the rd jntil it pulled the underbelly plastic guard off.  Again thankfully other than that, no damage was done.

I will add i never put mine across main roads, ive seen loads of window cleaners do that and ive always thought it very daft.

Mine was laid perfectly flat as well.

Go's to show then, I lay mine wherever whenever and never had an issue in 5 years.

Probably shouldn't of said that...

Very scary and very lucky could have been really bad. How did the car manage to pick up the hose that was lying very flat?
In over 10-years one incident where the hose was somehow picked up lying flat but then it just luckily dropped since then I've been more careful.
After hearing this I think we all need to be extremely careful

Had a close one where a customer's son was going out in the car, reversed out onto the road and took off with slight wheel spin on top of the hose. It gathered the hose up in a bundle underneath and I flagged him down before it had a chance to snag anything. Have never run hosing across a road since.
Count yourself lucky with the minimum damage you got away with, could have been a lot worse!

Yes a complete tool, boy racer in something that couldn't pull you out of bed. Hence the slight wheel spin 😂

Two separate issues at play here as others have alluded too ....

[1]Can your hose withstand cars or lorries driving over it ? Most can.
[2] Is it a good idea to test that out and lay it across a road where a vehicles speed can whip it up and pull it ?..... Probably not.

I've always known where to lay my hose. This is no revelation.

Apart from the one i mentioned earlier, thankfully this has never happened again. I think for the most part peoples cars are road worthy and I also ensure my hose is flat and laid across the road mostly at a right angle.  Though im pretty sure its because its a bright green hose laying across the road and all drivers slow down before going across it. Sometimes even to an halt to ask if they can drive across it and I resist the urge to ask them to wait 15 minutes whilst I finish  ;D

You should never run your hose over the road as these things can happen. Hoses can get flicked up and wrapped around wheels etc even if layed flat. There is a new firm near me, two guys in one van and they leave large coils of hose all over the road and pavements. Case of when not if  for those guys.

Allow me to explain to you to satisfy your curiosity.

I was parked in a very small parking area with 3 other vehicles parked.

My hose was laid perfectly flat across the car park to where I was working.

I noticed a car pulling out of a space but I don't pay much attention until I heard a crunch, the hose going tight and my reel exiting my vans back doors. As the reel hit the ground the hose snapped.

I went to the end of the car park and looked up the road, I could not see the car it had gone but a bloke told me it was wrapped around the car!

I don't know exactly how it happened but it did
