Gamekeepers thumb
« on: September 30, 2019, 11:39:03 am »
This is an injury that I've developed/aggrivated over the last year and now I can't get my socks on without causing some pain, holding a cup of tea by the handle with thumb and forefinger is not good.
I've now realised that it's actually starting on my other hand but not to the same extent... Yet!

So what is it?
It's an injury of the Ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb (top jointy bit) and affects volley ball players, fowl hunters from the motion/pressure when snapping rabbits necks and now daily slx35 users ::)roll

So I was off last Saturday and Thursday followed by a very short shift on Saturday and now I've taken today off due to the awkwardness of it. I used a splint on Friday but generally I'm a bit ped off with it.

I won't waste my time going to the doctor's as it's only a strain not a rupture but who's had it and how long before it settles down?
I'm thinking 2 weeks with a splint and using the slx25 then I'm off for about ten days. Then only use the 35 for flats and a support on each hand for a while.

Never heard of it, but I did tear my ulnar collateral ligament in a cycling crash some years back.

Had to take 2 months off work! Thankfully employed a lad part time from another company to cover my work. (All agreed)

I think it’s important to use a light grip. When it calms down, try holding the pole with a lighter grip.

Can’t say I’ve had any thumb issues from clamp levers etc but do get achy finger joints from time to time, I try to relax my hands on the pole but I think having a lighter pole helps in this aspect as you don’t need as tight a grip I find.
Could you not get yourself an xtreme pole maybe?
Best thing I ever did going from slx to xtreme, my body feels so much better!

Yeah I second that. Xtreme pole and brushes, win win.

2 months off work someone said they had 😂 😂 blimey,I hope you don’t get a proper injury see you in a year take your time coming back to work won’t you take as long as you need.

Have you forgotten to take your meds?

Having time off isn’t a ‘competition’ of time taken.

Without a diagnosis it would be pointless asking advise, go the doctors he is the person you should be getting advise from.

I recently had a thumb issue (age (55) and strain related.  It was diagnosed as tendons attaching to their sheaths which did not allow the tendon to move properly causing pain down the thumb, on the bone above thumb on wrist and sometimes would lose grip when holding things.

Loss of work:

1 hour in doctors.
1 hour in X-ray.
Waited 4 weeks for hand specialist appointment which was another hour.
1 day for surgery followed by one week off (paperwork time and canvassing).

The hand specialist said that if left their was a strong chance tendon would snap meaning longer surgery and longer off work.

Or listen to us jokers who will tell you to man up and get on with it.

It’s your health, I personally take mine seriously but obviously do not know your circumstances in reference to taking time out.

Going private speeds up getting surgery and would be approximately £3k dependant on where you are in the country, I am in Cheshire.

Your absolutely right Ralphie, but I don't think they know their arse from their elbow at times.
(I've just deleted my rant about them) :)

No it's a strain.
