Glass etched with water spots...HELP!
« on: September 16, 2017, 09:21:02 am »
Hi Guys.  Had an issue arise when collecting last night where a customer(whos a great guy) is getting a hard time from his missus about 1 window out of 15 on the entire house.

The window in question has spots on the bottom edge of the pane rising to about 4 inches and again at the top  edge and lowering the same distance.  These are only noticeable when i get close and look up from from an angle.  I

Ive tried the scraper and soap but no joy.

I'm pretty certain its got something to do with the K-REND they had redone 2 or so years ago but they also had the pane replaced after the builders scratched the glass.  Its the only window on the house that lies beneath any rendering.

I really want to get to the bottom of this as hes a valued customer and dont want to be loosing any other customers in this close-Knit area.

Any recommendations will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Simon

im a window cleaner so ill clean dirt, moss, algae, bird muck, pollen spots, etc from their frames, glass and sills but render/hard water stains/paint on frames etc NO.

for one window its not worth faffing about for (and ordering nasty corrosive chemicals that may/may not remove it).

why are you even worrying about it?id say im sorry but i cant remove it.they wont dump you just because you cant fix someone elses  f*** up.

99.99% of windows are fine so dont worry about the 00.01%
price higher/work harder!

l would tell the customer that they need to contact the firm who did the rendering and explain the problem, afterall they caused it.
explain that to remove the spots you would have to use harsh chemicals covered coshh rules and as a result could end up damaging the frames, tell them your insurance provider wont cover you for this. Its not something you do!

Offer to replace the unit for them if they wish, its very simple to do and very profitable. if you like contact me and l will show you how its extremely easy and is a valuable add on service. your liability insurance for this hardly goes up.

Bronze wool would be best but failing that fine wire wool would do and use it in combination with Unger Rub Out.

Some kind of waterproofing spray they used on the rendering , it goes everywhere as they use a pressure sprayer.

I'm much the same as many of the comments above and don't go out my way to take those marks off.

It's a specialist job, and the risk is you can damage the glass unit and have to replace it.

If you do REALLY want to get it off, then use a product called winsol crystal clear 550.

It's basically an acid so be extremely careful. Mix it 50/50 with some soap to start with and apply it to a small section on the glass to test it. DO NOT let it dry in, Use gloves, let it rest on the glass and then squeegee off until the marks are gone.

And most of all charge ALOT. Explain how specialist it is.

White vinegar is good for softening hard water stains, but I agree with previous posters if this is a waterproofer stain then show the customer with a scraper how it won't come off, at a microscopic level glass isn't very smooth and so if there is a deep stain like this it will not come off easily or at all!
