thats not bad bad,
would lower tds mean more pure water output? Yes
also do i need the other filters or just bang it straight through a 4040 ro? Yes
You need 2 prefilters to be sure, the first a sediment and the second a carbon block. You could get away with just a single carbon block prefilter if your water is good. Ours isn't so we have a sediment filter.
I opted for 20" prefilters and we use Fiberdyne carbon block filters on our 4040. A 20" has a service life of 75,000 liters which includes pure and waste.
Here's a link to mine in a cabinet. You should be able to follow the way its fitted together.

You need an inlet from the tap and a waste hose to an outside drain.
