Cheap vehicle tracker
« on: July 02, 2017, 11:12:02 am »
Just thought I share this.
Been using my old phone that is discreetly hidden away as a tracker. Had this idea when I came across an app called "find your phone". It can locate your lost phone with quite a good accuracy presuming that your gps is on.
Well I had an old phone at the back of a drawer like we all have :) and thought that it can be used as a tracker. There is an app called "FollowMee" which sends position of your vehicle every minute and records history of places you have been. The best thing is that the basic version is free so you only pay for your mobile data. For a small fee you get lots of additional features if required.
Anyway I got pay as you go simcard from ID mobile that charges 1p per MB. So with a current rate it cost me around £7.20 a year which is great. It shows me where my van is at any given time and records my history. The accuracy pretty good too. I can check it out it in my phone or computer once logged in.
Off course if you need a professional solution you need to look somewhere else but this has been working great for me.

Hope it helps somebody too.

I didn't think of that. Had a spare phone that could be put in good use. Like the idea that even without power it can still work for at least two days...

What I ment is that even if somebody disconects all of the wires from the car battery the phone will go on broadcasting the gps position at least for two more  days before its battery runs out

Surely the proper trackers have built in battery also.
