Felt backed carpet stuck to plywood floor - no underlay
« on: February 22, 2017, 02:55:57 pm »
Am a relative newbie, done NCCA courses, and have a job next week in a house I could do with some guidance on.

Each room has a different type of carpet, but in the dining area there's a thin, felt backed polypropylene carpet that looks like it's been glued to a plywood floor with no underlay.

The guy has recently bought the place and  drew his attention to this area and he wasn't aware of it, but thought the floor seemed 'odd'.  To be honest its the cleanest looking carpet in the house as it's charcoal coloured with some lighter coloured speckles going through it.

I was just going to hoover it and give it a light clean with the water gauge turned down so it doesn't get too wet.  Is it likely to come loose and ripple or am I best to leave it well alone?

Cheers in advance,

Jon

Hi Jon

Felt backed carpets fitted directly to the sub floor is commen method of installation.

Clean as you would if it were fitted on underlay and gripper, makes do difference that it is adhered directly to the sub floor.

Should just be glued around the edge. If it is fully stuck that would be unusual but shouldn't present you with any problems, just keep the water pressure low.

Cheers for the guidance, have come across carpet adhered in commercial environments but thought it strange in a house, was liking walking into a porta cabin with the bouncy ply floor.

Just a word of caution,
Are you sure it's on plywood  and it's not MDF over floorboards ?
If it's on MDF be careful it does not buckle, if it does the MDF in most cases has to come up.

Not likely to be mdf but could be hardboard still keeping the pressure low and moisture to a minimum it should be ok

Cheers for the advice,

Did as suggested by turning the water flow down and it came up a treat, despite the house still being like a building site, piles of sawdust, rubble, painter's splashes on other carpets that weren't there when I surveyed etc. No customer on site (was an early evening job as he moving in next day) for a couple of hours who, when he did turn up, was shocked when I said I was charging extra for the builder's clean.

He'd got the job cheap anyway on the basis it would be clean and empty and I'd be following the cleaners in (didn't accept my quote to clean as customer reckoned he could get a filthy house 3 bed, kitchen, double oven caked in grease , grotty tiled kitchen floor, mouldy windows etc cleaned for £50).  On the night of cleaning carpets I suggested he clean the kitchen and bathroom floors of the dust and dirt as it would get trodden into the clean carpets, he asked if that was something I could do for him!

Wasn't happy about extra charge for carpets, but was more than happy the job.
