Immersion wobble?

Wanted to fit immersion heaters to the vans for some time but have been concerned at how long they would last and the possible damage I imagine could be done to the body of the tank as the water sloshes around in a half empty tank moving and surely putting a lot of stain on the element and body of the tank. Or if the tank is empty and the van being driven simply the vibration and road bumps while the element sits in mid tank supported by nothing.
For this reason is it not better to fit the element in the top of the tank and hanging vertically?
Thanks.
Craig.

Never had any of the problems you've described.
If you put the element at the top it'll only heat the water at the top. Heat rises.

I've had three in three tanks all fitted by me. The current one (long element 3KW) has been in 4 years in a 650L and still works fine. Not even held in with a locking nut.
Wyedale tank - sits in lower left corner (looking from rear) between the back of the tank and the outlet hole.

Thats reassuring. How low can you fit them. About a foot from the bottom ?

Thanks all. Puts my mind at rest.
All now is to get round to doing it.
Thanks again.

I've had mine in the 500ltr upright tank for nearly 6yrs. No problem at all. If you're using the mechanical flange it won't go anywhere, it'll be tight as you like.
Fit it as low down as your arms can safely manage, it'll be fine.
