Should TDS reading be lower??
« on: May 20, 2006, 09:15:42 pm »
Hi all..

I have just received my 1000Lt 4 stage static system which is working fine and making our working day a lot easier. But i would like to know if my TDS reading is too high?

My TDS for my tap water source is 315ppm, After going through a 4X40" RO & 2 pre-filters it's 0.25ppm. Should this be lower?.

After going through 4th stage DI resin, it's 0.00ppm. do you think that 0.25 is too high? if so how can i acheive a lower TDS reading? I've tried opening the waste tap fully and flushing RO for an hour. I also open the waste tap & flush RO for a few minutes before each fill.

any ideas on how i can lower my TDS reading pre DI stage. or is 0.25ppm perfectly acceptable for a water source with a TDS of 315ppm?

Cheers Simon.. :)

025ppm sounds a little high, my brother has a 4x40 ro and has 120-130ppm in and 007-009 out, but he's got pretty good water pressure, around 65psi. What is your mains water pressure? If your water pressure is low then your tds will be higher. The only solution to this prob would be to get a booster pump to raise the pressure.

Hi Tim.

My water pressure is also good. 65PSI. So i dont think the problem is due to water pressure. My tap TDS is quite a bit higher than your brothers 315ppm.

Do you think that 0.25ppm would be high enough to deplete my resin and shorten the life of my RO & pre-filters.

Or should i accept a TDS of 0.25ppm, due to the fact that my tap water has a high TDS content?. Do new systems take time to settle in. Could i expect the reading to lower naturally over time?.

Simon :)

It will shorten the life of your resin, but even at 025ppm your resin will last a good amount, it all depends on what size your di vessel is. It wont shorten the life of your ro though, as long as you flush at least every week if not every day, and dont forget to change your prefilters regularly. The carbon pre-filter takes out the chlorine from the water, but the carbon filter is only effective for a max of 6 months for removing chlorine. Your ro should've come with details of the life span of the filters in liters.

I dont think that ro's settle in and give lower ppm's over time, if anything they might rise slightly as the ro gets older

Are you saying 25ppm or 0.25ppm ? There is a big difference.

My 4 x 40 Ro brings the tds down to 0.01 from a tap water reading of 234.

My tap water presure is 80psi.

So what make do you all have?

Mine is a Pentair.
