You need a upright vac I would not use an expensive HWE machine as a vacuum cleaner.
The dry dust will get in the vac motors unless you used a dust downer.
Not worth the hassle use an upright and a cylinder vac for the edges and stair's.

Definitely get an upright vac, makes such a difference to your cleaning. The beating bar at the bottom helps in extracting more dry soil. Upright vac is made for vaccing carpets and HWE machine is for HWE cleaning.
