Mileage log

What mileage log do you use, or do you just write it in a book. Its a pain in the arse. We used to just deduct a % for personal use, from the claimed petrol.

I'm just a percentage.  Think it's 90% my accountant does, as I have a seperate car too.

I  just claim 90% for business use.  I tested it a couple of time and that may even be in their favour.
Van is my only vehicle.

One accountant I visited said, you have to log every time you go in the van. Mileage, where to and for what. WHAT A PAIN.
The fine is £2500. That's £5000 I am in debt :)

That can't be right mate, I don't even keep at track of my mileage, only person who takes my mileage is mot centre.
Never been asked for mileage in over 10 years with this accountant.

There are two ways of claiming fuel/depreciation costs for your van .

As a percentage , in which case you need to keep all fuel receipts etc or you can record business mileage and claim 45p per mile .

If that were so, I'm sure my accountant woud have told me by now.  He thinks I';m being too generous with 10% personal use and asked me if I ought to go 5%.  I could justify it too, but I wouldn't want a load of hassle if HMRC ever decided to run the rule over me.  10% I can show them.  5% might get a little picky.  In reality I'm guessing it's about 7.5%.

I used to claim everything back. They changed it. Not sure when.
You have to keep a record of everything...poop as it is.
I am with you though. Kept no mileage record..other than MOT

That seems to indicate that a reasonable estimate is acceptable

"you’ll be asked to make estimates about some of your business expenses - you don’t have to give accurate amounts"
