I ended up scrapping mine (Trafic) recently because it needed nearly £1k to replace pump and clean out fuel system - though there were other unrelated problems to add to the cost.
I'm told that bits can come off them and get into the fuel.
The good(ish) news is that those pumps are much cheaper than they were a few years ago. I think they were nearly £2k at one time but can be had for about £600 - £700 now.
If you do replace the pump, it may possibly need to have the system cleaned out too - but your mechanic will advise. Probably a good idea to (a) get a new pump rather than used (b) possibly get the system and tank cleaned out and (c) replace fuel filter. Apparently, some of the fuel filters around a while back weren't up to the job. It may be that you need to take advice on which to get.
Please note that I'm no mechanic. I'm repeating things that I was told by the garage. All subject to your mechanic's advice of course because he's there and I'm not.
