Think I may have cracked single glazed window panel...
« on: September 25, 2015, 05:22:57 pm »
I was doing a first clean today on a house with old single glazed windows & wooden frames. I got to the last window scrubbed, rinsed  and to my horror found a 10cm crack across the left hand corner - I hadn't noticed this crack before I started cleaning the window so I'm guessing it must have been me.... Anyway I left a note for the customer explaining that if this crack had not been there before I would reimburse the cost of replacing the window pane.

What I can't believe however is how easily this pane cracked. I was making an extra effort to be gentle (since single glazing is more fragile than double).

What do you guys do to mitigate this sort of problem:

* Don't clean old single glazed windows
* Get to the customer to agree to a waiver if a window gets cracked
* Charge more to cover yourself for any breakages
* Clean using trad methods rather than WFP

Any advice appreciated ...

Be more careful.

Just learn from the experience, single  pane glass won't be much to replace, not knowing you technique I can't say for certain, but your very unlikely to have cracked it, good chance it was already done and you didn't notice, did you hear it crack ?

No I didn't hear it crack.....

How much, ball park figure, do reckon it is to replace a single pane roughly 18in x 12in?

The chap I use would probably charge around £25 all in.

Hopefully, the customer is upstanding and honest, my money is on that it was previously cracked.

Depends if the building is listed. If it is the cost will go up, you'll be looking at about £45.00 for supply and deliver as far as I remember for glass that's supplied for buildings of this nature. There's a company supplies panes suitable if this is the case, I can't remember what the type of glass is called, something like Royal. Anyway, if you need to know I can find out for you when I'm back in the country next week.

Must be a great life being an international window cleaner.

I bet taking your pole as hand luggage is a bit of a problem though?

Heard back from the customer earlier today and it was previously cracked!

Need to make a mental note to check for this sort of thing before cleaning ...
