Just working on Saturdays and how to deal with money? New
« on: May 11, 2015, 01:37:11 pm »
If you clean windows just on a Saturday and earn £60-80 a week how do you pay tax on this and do the self assessment?     If you lose your job and this is your main job, is it different? Worth registering then?  Even if it's a small amount which you are trying to build up?

Only if you want to be legal everything you earn has to be declared to the tax man, do most that work the same as
you declare it, I wouldn't think so.

If it becomes your main job then you need to register, its not hard you just do it online and you don't pay tax on the first
£10500 plus expenses so even if your not making big money why not.
You might even get a tax rebate from your old job.
Its nothing to worry about just keep a record of what it costs you to do the job and a record on what you make.

you are already earning 14400 a year so your tax allowance has already been used on your main job , you will need to pay income tax on your window cleaning earnings (after expenses) if you want to stay legal.

You can be employed (PAYE) and self employed at the same time.

So you will need to register yourself as self employed for your Saturday business and declare your income.

Just curious though, how do they catch people?  Would they be able to look at phone records and use that as evidence?  Would they follow someone and photograph them?   If they don't know their full name and address how would they get 'em?

Well I found out that I cleaned the windows for a local tax inspector. I didn't know that to begin with though.  :)

It didn't make any difference as everything we earn, including tips given is declared.

If they do investigate you then they can make your life very difficult. You get on the naughty step and they keep calling you in for interviews.
As has been mentioned, you need to register your business and pay tax on your earnings to be legit.

Disgruntled customers, other window cleaners with a vendetta, nasty neighbours etc can all make an anonymous telephone call to the local receiver.  They don't need to have proof, they just need to make a suggestion that something doesn't add up.
A service supplier could publicly brag about the car he is driving, but his wage indicates he doesn't earn enough to have it.

People with a grudge, officials acting on a tip off that you are working for yourself weekends only so must be pocketing all the cash, etc. Better to do the right thing than to be looking over your shoulder wondering if you are going to be caught out.

To the best of my knowledge he does NOT have to register as self employed. He already has an "employed" status, so is in the system. He does need to fill in a tax return though declaring his other (aside from his PAYE job) income.

Think you do need to register to pay class 2 national insurance best to be upfront with tax office as they can be a pain at best of times ,if you get caught fiddling them you will be right in it up to your neck. If it has not changed you have 3 months from start of working to register

Lot of dole brigade come out when the weather improves and disappear when the winter re appears. These dole brigade workers drive down the prices for window cleaning in some areas as customers remark their dole brigade workers charge ridiculous prices as it's all cash in hand to them.  They are a pain in the backside on honest tax declared workers trying to make an honest living and good riddance to benefit cheats and those who don't declare working on the side whilst PAYE, why should they imitate benefit cheats just cause they have a PAYE job.

Why should someone earn £10 and pocket the lot when I have to pay a few ££ of every tenner I earn.

Do it legit.

Maybe if you saved your bile for the reason why people cant earn enough on a PAYE job during the week and have to give
up their weekends just to top up a wage that doesn't even reach a living standard it would be time better spent.

Read up on what they call the benefits trap mate before judging everybody, will give you a clue its being able to support your
family and keep a roof over your head while building trying to build a wage from scratch.
The system doesn't support this, they cut of the help before you can get to the wage you need just to keep your head above water.
Its the system that actually causes a lot of these problems in the first place.

There are so many rich fat cats earning millions and living off shore like star bucks and amazon and you are worried about  a few quid more in your spare time . There are many in government and minister not paying tax its said they you want to do your duty to your country. Just look on You Tube and see who they are /. One is known for calling chaps plebs. Its disgusting.
