Hi,
We have just been and cleaned an end of tenancy for a letting agent.
In all 3 bedrooms there were red marks where furniture had been,  the same shape as the items that appear to have been there previously.
No amount of cleaning or treating would remove them.
The colour appeared to be very similar to the red/brown painted skirting boards.
Any ideas?

Looks like the darker colour is the original colour of the carpet (being protected from light by the furniture), and the rest of the carpet has faded. No wonder you couldn't remove it!

That's what I initially thought and queried it.
I have been told the carpet is actually cream.
I would have expected a different shade of cream but this was an obvious shade of red.
Where the bed stood it is still cream underneath which confused me even more.

I have had a carpet with browning caused by damp wooden skirting boards caused by condensation  leatching their tannins in to the wool carpet. I couldn't do anything with it in the end. This may possibly be the problem... The last thing I  tried was  oxibrite, fibre buff and fibre shampoo applied and left to dry.

Could be caused by off gassing of chemicals from cheap underlay. These are trapped in the carpet fibres by the furniture and discolour the fibres. However this usually manifests itself as Yellow discolouration rather than Red.
Its funny that the skirtings are a similar colour but can't work outhow that would discolour the carpet in such a uniform way.

Maybe wood stain from the underneath of the furniture

Its called photo bleaching ! You learn this sort of thing on the woolsafe course ! Lol
its when the pigment in the wool is effected by the uv and lightens the colour, the darker colour around the border is probably where it hasn't been efected by the sunlight

I agree with John...it looks like a variation of Phenolic Yellowing....only pink

Could be as John says, or could be as already suggested too, furniture dye from a flat base, particularly if carpet has previously been cleaned.
