Check you can make a deposit with you mobile number but it must be set up.
Not worried about Deposits - it's Withdrawals that's got me. People can make as many deposits as they like. ;D ;D

Sorry I don't use go cardless.
So what you're saying is. I can get someone else's sort code acc. no , and address.
Sign up for an account with Go Cardless using those details.
Then using those details authorise a payment of up to £5k to be taken out of that account?
With no checks or security?
If they find out about this in Lagos we're doomed!!!!

Yes mate, it is possible.

Possible yes, but also pretty pointless.

All payments coming out of your account via direct debit are covered by the direct debit guarantee so any money taken would be refunded. If you take money out it'll need to go somewhere too, that would be your bank account which would be easily traceable once the authorities got involved.

What is more of a worry for me, would be someone maliciously setting up direct debits to multiple charities - this is easily done with sort code and account number (just ask Clarkson) - just to be a pain in my ass.

Why on earth would the "swear filter" change "my ass" to "I disagree"

What a crock.
