Do you just spray it on as evenly as possible, or do you wipe it over with a cloth after? Or just pray direct to a cloth and rub on the pole sections?

Spray a thin even layer directly onto the pole and allow to dry.  That's it.

It is the correct type of stuff, but I bought a can a short while ago to test and it is not very good. It does not apply enough PTFE film and seems not to dry out properly.

As long as it applies a visible white layer and flash dries within one minute any dry PTFE spray should be fine to use (just not the WD-40 one!).
