Been meaning to ask this for years!

Why does wool carpet which has been exposed to a lot of sunlight near windows or patio doors absolutely stink when you clean it? I find it embarrassing sometimes.
No deodoriser masks the smell. I just tell my customer the smell will go once the carpet is dry and never had a complaint.

The mind bogles, sheep and sunbathing. Sun and a bath towel, yes.

I expect Hector just hypnotises them afterwards and makes them believe it smells nice. ;D

Ultra violet light doesn't just damage the colour dyes, it also breaks down the backing of the carpet.  Is this where the foul odour comes from once you start cleaning it?

Must admit always wondered about that myself - its a very distinctive smell - often the light has broken down the carpet fibres so the pile is thinner so there may well be something in ec's suggestion that it is the backing that is giving off the smell...
