I have a client asking for a guarantee on the sealer have quoted to apply.

How do you get round this? Or just tell them you can't?

Guarantee against what ? What have you promised it will do ? It will enhance the colour - maybe. Will it stop weeds - nope. Will it stop moss - nope. Will it stop stains - probably not. It will stabilise the jointing sand. You can offer a manufacturers guarantee and you just need to guarantee your workmanship. Just carefully select the product you sell the customer - what were you considering ? Acrylic or polyurethene - what are you putting it on ?  Topical, impregnator ?

I do tend to swerve sealing, this is a good customer though.

I'm sealing a slate patio, brand new. I thinks she's wanting a guarantee for how long it will last, which obviously I can't do. All I can do is offer the manufacturer guarantee that the sealer works, and a guarantee that my workmanship will be of a high standard.

Anything other than that isn't possible. Just wondered what people did when asked this.

It's a fairly straightforward job, with very small joints so should be just like sealing floors we clean inside.

Slate or black limestone?
What are you going to seal it with?

Does Slate really need sealing?

Roger

The real answer to that is NO AND YES!

If slate needed sealing we would be running round earning millions sealing every slate roof in the Country.  That said customers see Slate and buy it.  They have it fixed to their floors and then realise in 90% of cases that they have a dull almost lifeless floor that in most cases is extremely difficult to clean.

So enter the Enhancing Sealers such as:

Aqua Mix Enrich n Seal,  Miracle 511 Seal & Enhance or even LTP Colour Intensifier & Stainblock.  These or others are then applied and suddenly the customer has a floor that looks wet and enhanced but more importantly it is a lot easier to clean!

So the answer to your question is YES and NO

Exactly the reason why she wants it sealing, for a wet look and to make it easier for her to clean.

When I contacted Resiblock about their sealer, and guarantee I was told that that it covered against oil staines for a period of two years as long as the surface had been covered by two coats, and applied correctly !
When I asked for a quote for their high quality sealer to cover 200m2 of block I was told it would cost £700 . . . and that was with a trade discount  :o
