A cautionary tale.............
3 years ago I paid a fortune for PAYE software, so that I could file returns on line and get £250 back from our beloved chancellor.
Because I now pay monthly, last year I was ahead of myself, and filed the return on 6th April.... 6 weeks before the deadline.
I printed and kept the details of the return.
Last month I got a very nasty phone call from HMRC threatening me with a massive fine, for not filing.
I sent them the filing acknowledgement to prove I filed.
Oh no, says HMRC, if you haven't got a copy of our email, then that proves we haven't had your return.
So it's 50/50..... I can't find the email, but they can't find the return!
I know I filed the return... I filed the return for my wife's business same day, and they got that one. But I can't prove it. So I have a £1000 fine to pay.
So anyone else filing on line, be warned
Civil Servants, you gotta love them
