two pay monthly phones sole trader tax question.
« on: April 11, 2014, 08:45:08 am »
My wife need a new phone and she takes most of the  business calls and returns calls etc as my virtual landline comes through to both our mobiles.

So my question is can i put two pay monthly phones through the business as tax deductible with out it being an issue with the tax man  ??? ???

Thanks paul

The general question to ask yourself is: "If the tax man asked me why I was putting XXXXXXXX  through the business, could I give him a reason without any hesitation?"

If yes, then put it in.  From your original post I'd say "yes" but I might only take 70% of the cost into expenses to allow for some personal use.

I just put 50% of the total bill, me & the wife's phone.
Seems fair to me.
Unlimited calls/text so pretty much the same bill each month.
Couldn't do without one of 'em and half seems fair to me.

Mine contract is paperless, even the contract details.

How do you keep a record of your mobile contract details for tax record purposes ?

Go online to view your bill (EE send me a text each month to say a new bill is ready to view)
There will be a 'print' option.
Click it and then you'll have your bill.
If you can't see a 'print' button, do a screen shot then print that.

It will be on your bank statement that you will give to your accountant at the end of the month for your book keeping or at the end of the year if thats how you work.
